A very good summation of the season and agree 100%. In fact, it's a summation of this boards tenure with the exception of 55.

Whilst their legacy will be remembered for saving us from the spivs it will also be remembered as one of absolute failure.

Their report card would read 2/10

If boatd means club leadership, wasn't there a radical change before Gerrard? I don't remember the details, but der Berliner told me that the people leading the club now are at least supporters?

It is, without any doubt, interesting to say that the board over the last ~nine years have delivered a level of consistent success in Europe. This success is relative to our previous efforts and not absolute.

Some people don't see that and describe the last nine years as an absolute failure.

That's not accurate. Sadly not everyone will agonise over questions like is it best to make yet another innaccurate post or to say nothing?

They are, and in reality, that in itself may be an issue (thinking as fans rather than business men).

They are undoubtedly successful business men in their own right/fields but have shown that they are incapable of running a football club.

Any doubt in that assertion is easily proven by looking at the accounts and our trophy count under their control.

If that isn't sufficient evidence, then look at some of their decisions that have cost the club financially both football and business wise.

Their record speaks for itself and its manifested into this utter horrific season where we've come to a point where even the current board admit that without fresh investment we will not move forward.

It has been an absolute failure.

Our lack of domestic success has financially enabled our rivals to continue to best us with free access to the Champions League and the cash rewards that follow. They have let the wage bill spiral out of control to a point where we had to have a fire sale in the summer and take a hit on many players just to get them off the wage bill, in preparation for a takeover and basically writing off an entire season. They have left us with a squad with little or no value in it, constantly changed direction in terms of football strategy resulting in high turnover of football operations staff, hiring various chancers with no real idea what they are doing from the likes to Caixinhia to a PSV scout being appointed to head up our football department. Not to mention the Sydney debacle, or the Copland road stand reworks which left us locked out of Ibrox for around 4 months.

We seem totally unprepared for the European squad regulations, despite them being the same for years and always register a squad with a few spaces short. We always seem unprepared for European qualifiers games even though they happen at the same time year after year. Quite frankly our European performances are a complete outlier to everything else that occurs. I'm convinced that our domestic performances have been heavily impacted by our lack or preparation for the extra toll European games takes on a squad.

Any additional financial gains that people may perceive us to have made from our European results are:

1) Financially less than our direct rivals, so pointless.

2) Not resulted in any actual silverware, so pointless.

3) Any money we made from Europe was flushed down the toilet on lame ducks like Roofe, Yilmaz, Lammers et al, so, pointless.

While it was nice to go to Seville and get some nice results along the way, in the years before, in the years after.  The only saving grace is the 55 season. But given the other mob are sitting at 4 already, all they did was buy some time.

Have I mentioned it was pointless?

The Yanks don't have much to do here to improve things, it really wont be difficult to follow up the bowling club committee that would struggle to organise a jumble sale.

I suppose we get to celebrate our 'had some decent results in Europe' trophy while our rivals overtake our trophy haul with actual, real trophies that get written into the history books.

But that's not the board's fault, it's our fault for being unrealistic and impatient don't you know.

The only constant positive in the whole sorry mess is us, the fans. We buy season tickets in record amounts, we've pushed the commercial part of the business to the forefront, we pay "top end" priced for European packages, we follow the team all over Europe no matter how poorly they perform.

Your post and the OP are 100% correct and I really fail to see how any fan can think otherwise.

I'm not convinced. Also if you think the European money is the decisive factor (it isn't) then you will need to play some European matches.

No. Without the money we would be further from our direct rivals.

No. Only three teams win an actual European trophy in any year. Supporters of other teams enjoy it regardless. Besides if you think the money is important then you don't think mere participation is pointless.

No. Bad transfers will happen at every level of success.

One league title is not as good as more league titles, yeah, great. Maybe we would not have won 55 without the money, and experience, of the two previous years of European football.

There is an answer for each point worth responding to so perhaps a bit premature to fantasise about posting such an elite gif.

You don't need to be convinced. We are where we are. We received far less money per European game that rotten mob have over the years. Efficiency is sought after by everyone.

Yes, we have spent the money very poorly.

Yes. The money is only important if utilised correctly.

Yes. Much like anything else in life resembling a gamble, success will vary. Our success has been far poorer (especially recently) than what I perceive normal to look like. And it has then had a knock on effect to following years transfer business.

I'm glad you grasp that, maybe someone can tell our board, they seem to struggle with basic arithmetic when it comes to football. Maybe we would have been on 59 by now if we had focused on domestic competition and been run more efficiently. Who knows.

Many of what I state is my opinion and of course subjective. What cannot be argued about is the lack of silverware. In gifs or otherwise.

I think European success is a necessary condition for domestic success. This is based on where we started from when we got back to the top league.

I think this explains why most of your two posts miss the mark. I'm not even talking about whether the number of trophies won is acceptable. I'm arguing that the failure has not been absolute and where there has been success it has been in one area where we need it before going any further.

So 5 seasons of European "success' has yielded 1 season of domestic success.

How many more seasons of European "success" do we need before it transmits into continued domestic success?

I'd agree that when we got back to the top league, we needed more European involvement to help us domestically. That umbilical cord was cut with 55.  In fact for the past few years post Seville, we have regressed significantly domestically. While European performances have been at a similar level.

My posts might miss your mark, you can ignore trophies if you like. Our club has done for long enough. I'm demonstrating that despite our European 'success', the other failures have been so high impact that the European 'success' has not done enough heavy lifting to balance it out.
