Rangers are our inspiration: Polish side Widzew Lodz boast after claiming second highest season ticket sales in lower leagues

 

The former Polish champions hope to follow Rangers' rise to the top tier with the help of their fans after going bankrupt and being demoted to the fifth tier of Polish football.

 

Former Polish champions Widzew Lodz have cited Rangers as an inspiration after selling the second highest number of season tickets for a lower league club ... behind the Ibrox side.

 

Widzew Lodz - who won the Polish League twice in the 1990s - were relegated to the fifth tier of Polish football after going bankrupt two years ago.

 

However, they have now sold a record 10,000 season tickets for the start of their new season this month in the Polish Fourth Division, after winning promotion last season and hope to sell 12,000.

 

They are claiming to have sold the the second highest amount of season tickets in lower league football in the world.

 

And they have stated only Rangers have sold more while in top flight exile, after they sold 38,000 in 2012 a year after the club's financial meltdown.

 

Widzew vice-president Przemysław Klementowski said: "It's been an incredible response from our supporters.

 

"We have checked the records and we have now overtaken Parma - who sold 9000 season tickets when they had to play in Italy's lower leagues.

 

"Only Rangers in Scotland have sold more while out of their top league and they are now back in the Premier League in Scotland, which is our aim too.

 

"It's remarkable because in Poland there is not a big tradition of buying season tickets. I think even Legia Warsaw don't have many more than us."

 

Widzew have just moved into a new 18,000-capacity Stadion Widzewa ground and the team who once reached a European Cup semi-finals in the 1980s are desperate to return to the top of Polish football.
