Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor feels that he has banished the infamous Boozegate saga after winning the SPL and he wants to stay at Ibrox.

The shot-stopper had been axed by boss Walter Smith as a result of his off-field problems when the league trophy was won last season.

But McGregor played in Sunday's 1-0 win at Hibernian which retained the silverware and allowed him to move on from 12 months ago.

"It's a nice feeling to be part of the title-winning day and actually play," McGregor said in the Daily Record.

"Although I felt I'd played my part in it last season, it's great to be in the starting XI on the big day.

"It was hard watching the boys celebrate last season and not be out there. I know it was my own fault. But that makes this sweeter."

Controversy

Rangers' campaign has been shrouded in controversy, with rumours that the majority of the squad could be sold to solve financial problems and manager Walter Smith has been working without a contract.

McGregor believes it is now vital that the core of the squad and Smith stay together in order to maintain a winning feeling.

"It is really important that the club try to keep this squad together so we can go on and win more silverware," he said.

He added: "I hope the manager stays as well, but that won't be up to me.

"I still have three years left on my contract and want to stay, but the ball is not in my court.

"I love this place and I've been at the club for half of my life, so I don't want to leave."
