Motherwell to sign the fox in the box.

From the BBC.

How the feck did he earn that tag?

Motherwell have stepped up their interest in signing former England international Francis Jeffers.

The 30-year-old striker, who had a spell on loan at Rangers from Charlton in 2005, is a free agent.

Jeffers had been on short-term deal at Australian club Newcastle Jets but failed to agree a new contract.

Fir Park boss Stuart McCall had told BBC Scotland of his frustration that he could not acquire a new striker during the January transfer window.

However, he maintained that he would continue his search by looking for out-of-contract players.

Jeffers, who has been transferred for a total of £10.6 million during his 13-year career since starting out at Everton, fits the bill.

He cost Arsenal £8m in June 2001 when he was signed from the Goodison Park club after an impressive goal-scoring run of 18 top-flight English league goals in 37 starts.

During his time at Highbury he earned his one and only England cap in a friendly against Australia in February 2003, scoring his country's only goal in a 3-1 defeat.

He was bought by Charlton for £2.6m in 2004. He also had spells at Blackburn, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday.

Last summer he had unsuccessful trials with both Everton and Blackpool before securing a deal to Australia A-League side Newcastle Jets.

Jeffers turned out for Rangers in the Champions League during his spell at Ibrox in the latter half of 2005.

But during his spell in Scotland he was only able to make 14 appearances - half of them as a substitute - and did not score any goals.
