Is Naismith's long term future in central midfield?

Recommended Posts

I remember going to a game last year, I think it was an early league cup tie, when Rangers were down to the bare bones in midfield and Naismith was fielded as a supposedly emergency cover central midfield player. He was the surprising MOTM on the night and everybody was remarking how well he'd done considering he'd never played there.

Spin the clock on a year and he's had a few more chances to play there and has impressed each and every time. I don't see him as an out an out striker, he's definitely better playing off the front, but neither is he really a winger as he doesn't really like to be pinned down out wide and always drifts infield. If he has a long term position in the team it either needs to be 'in the hole' as they say or as an out and out central midfielder. The evidence of the games he's played there suggests to me he could develop into an excellent player there.

Anybody agree?

He's definitely an excellent option to have for central midfield, that's for sure. If we line up that same front six that beat Motherwell yesterday against Maribor I think we'll be in the Europa League group stage draw on Friday lunchtime.

If we line up that same front 6 against Maribor we will be punted OOT of the Europa league for fielding an inelligible player..... Naismith is suspended :flipa:

Had we not had suspensions to worry about then I would agree. I would have NO hesitation in playing Naismith & Davis as the CM pairing. Funny thing is that Edu & McCulloch seem to get most of their plaudits for "breaking up play" - I actually think that Naismith is more effective than both of them in breaking up play because he is a constant pain in the arse - rarely gives his opponent any peace. And when he gets the ball his first touch is decent, he looks to break quickly, looks to make a forward pass and continues his run forward and gets into dangerous areas. In short, he would be a nightmare for any opponent to play against.

In response to the OP - I think that Naismith is long overdue a shot at playing beside Davis at CM. Both of them are creative, pacy, skilful and tenacious. Now that Lafferty is back we can afford to drop Naismith back. I actually think that he would be more effective playing CM because the timing of his runs from deep is exceptional, whilst his finishing can leave a bit to be desired at times, when playing up front.
