Dorin Goian is hoping real progress can be made on securing new owners for Rangers after the team raised morale with Sunday’s Old Firm victory.

The Romanian centre-back helped attain a 3-2 win over Celtic that lifted some of the gloom that has settled on the club following the plunge into administration last month.

Goian is now keen for further good news off the pitch, with administrators Duff & Phelps aiming to whittle down the five parties interested in owning Rangers to a shortlist of two or three by the end of this week. Final offers would then be put forward for consideration before a preferred bidder is decided upon.

Like the rest of the Ibrox squad, Goian took a hefty pay cut to keep the club going until the end of the season and is keen to see a resolution as soon as possible.

I am still happy at Rangers and we now just hope that a new investor will arrive by the summer,’ said Goian.

‘There are a few parties who are interested, but it’s difficult to think someone will buy the club because of all the debts left by others. Hopefully, if and when the debts became smaller, Rangers will be taken over.’

Potential buyer Brian Kennedy was at Sunday’s match and held informal discussions with the administrators afterwards, while Paul Murray is continuing talks with Ticketus over their role in his Blue Knights consortium.

Murray could yet bid without the London-based firm — whose deal over future season-ticket sales effectively funded Craig Whyte’s takeover — if he cannot reach an agreement he believes to be in the best interests of the club.

The administrators are considering reneging on the deal Whyte struck with Ticketus following a hearing in the Court of Session last week.

American group Club 9 Sports are also regarded as serious contenders to buy Rangers, while an unnamed UK-based consortium and a bid from Singapore are in the frame.

Goian, meanwhile, has revealed how the importance of stopping Celtic winning the title at Ibrox was drummed into him by Rangers supporters.

‘If we lost the game, Celtic were champions. We all knew that,’ said Goian.

'The Rangers fans bombarded us with messages of support and told us we simply couldn’t lose this game.

‘That put some pressure on us, but it also mobilised us. The match was just madness. But we deserved to win.’

Goian believes referee Calum Murray was correct to send off Cha Du-Ri and Victor Wanyama, although he claimed Carlos Bocanegra shouldn’t also have seen red.

‘All the referee’s decisions against Celtic seemed right to me,’ said Goian.

'The first one was the defender’s fault and he was the last player.

‘And the second one was because of a two-footed challenge. Our red card was unlucky. Personally, I thought it was only a yellow card.'
