Rangers legend scored earliest nodded goal

Recommended Posts

A RANGERS legend has been given the nod by dictionary chiefs who launched a search for footballâ??s first ever goal-scoring â??headerâ?.

Word buffs traced a reference to Peter Campbell netting with his napper in 1875 â?? 16 years before what was thought to be the termâ??s first use.

Now his goal against Barrhead will be recorded for posterity in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Last night Gers historian Robert McElroy said: â??Campbell was a crowd-pleaser â?? the Davie Cooper or Willie Henderson of his day.

â??Back then the balls were very heavy and many players wore hats or caps â?? which tells you not many were expecting to have to use their foreheads. Itâ??s fitting heâ??ll be remembered this way.â?

Researchers thought the earliest mention of the word was in 1891 until a trawl uncovered the report of Campbellâ??s â??beautiful headerâ? in a 3-0 victory over the Renfrewshire side. OED spokeswoman Fiona McPherson said: â??It will be included in the dictionary as the first example for the term.â?

Campbell â?? one of four founding members of the club in 1872 â?? was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame two years ago.
