Burt Stars For Scotland

Recommended Posts

RANGERS academy midfielder Liam Burt captained and scored a crucial goal for Scotland under-17s last night against Iceland with two other Gers involved in the match.

Burt captained the side and scored in the 51 minute of the game to give the Scots the lead. A darting run from St Mirren’s Kyle McAllister cut through the Icelandic midfield, creating space for Burt on the wing.

The Gers youngster cut inside on to his right-foot on the edge of the box, where he curled the ball off the post past Iceland’s substitute goalkeeper Aron Birkir Stefansson to give Scotland the lead.

Stefan Ljubicic equalised for Iceland with 13 minutes of the match remaining, however it was Burt again who was then the architect for the winner in the 80th minute.

The Light Blues academy was also represented in the match by Jamie Barjonas who played for just over an hour of the game and goalkeeper Kieran Wright who was on the bench.

Late winner secures victory for Scotland Under-17s

Tuesday, 23 February 2016

Vauxhall Under-17 International Challenge Match

Scotland 2-1 Iceland

Tuesday 23rd February 2016, 7pm

Cappielow Park, Greenock

(Burt 51’, L. Morrison 80’; Ljubicic 77’)

A late winner from Lewis Morrison secured a 2-1 victory for Scotland Under-17s over Iceland in an enjoyable encounter at Cappielow.

A draw looked likely when Stefan Ljubicic equalised for the visitors with three minutes to go after a second-half goal from Rangers midfielder Liam Burt had given Scotland the lead. However, the Kilmarnock player came off the bench to grab a win for the hosts.

Scot Gemmill’s side started the game strongly, opting to press the visitors high up the pitch. This strategy yielded chances for Scotland early on, in particular through Glenn Middleton on the left-wing. Forcing Gudmunder Tryggvason into a mistake deep in the Icelandic half, the Norwich City winger’s cutback from the byline was just out of reach of Scotland’s forwards.

Half-way through the first half, Scotland came close to opening the scoring. A whipped corner into the visitors’ penalty box from Liam Burt found the head of Aberdeen’s Connor McLennan, who forced a fine save from Aron Dagur Birnuson.

Despite having the better of the first half, it was Iceland that looked the more likely to open the scoring after the interval. Celtic’s Aidan McAdams was forced into a fine double-save from Stefan Alexander Ljubicic early in the second-half to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.

The fine goalkeeping from McAdams was to be the catalyst for Scotland, who were to break the deadlock 11 minutes into the second half.

A darting run from St Mirren’s Kyle McAllister cut through the Icelandic midfield, creating space for Rangers’ Liam Burt on the wing. The Scotland captain cut inside on to his right-foot on the edge of the box, where he curled the ball off the post past Iceland’s substitute goalkeeper Aron Birkir Stefansson to give Scotland the lead.

With three minutes to go, Burt’s strike looked to have been the difference between the sides. However, a fine run and cut-back from AZ Alkmaar’s Jonatan Jonsson teed up Ljubicic who equalised for Halldor Bjornsson’s team.

The match was not over there, however, as Scotland scored a dramatic winner.

A mazy run from Liam Burt was followed by a crisp through-ball to Lewis Morrison, who slotted his first chance of the match past Stefansson to earn Scotland a deserved victory.

Scotland: McAdams, Bowers (Aitchison 73’), Gallacher, Meredith, Duffy, Barjonas (Connolly 64’), Burt ©, Middleton (H.Morrison 73’), McAllister (Hornby 73’), Gilmour (Knox 73’), McLennan (L.Morrison 64’)

Subs not used: Wright (GK), Baur, C.Morrison.
