  2. I got what i was hoping for, a start for MOH, Forrester, Garner and Windass. I think they all had a good game, if Windass's screamer had went in we would be saying we are on the right path to a good season. But it didn't and at 1-1 i was left frustrated tbh.

My biggest frustration tonight was playing the ball out from the back, it was dire, big Ford seams slow and ponderous with the ball at his feet, his distribution is terrible, add to that players constantly passing the ball back to him, not under any pressure i add, but just because they can. Result is our build play up is slow, ponderous to the point of negative.

I am not advocating long ball tactics, no one wants to go back to the dark days hit and hope, but we need to find a middle ground where we can get the ball moving forward at pace and stop the bloody unnecessary constant back passes to the goalie.

Did i say MOH, Forrester, garner and Windass were good tonight? They deserve another start on Saturday from that performance from them tonight.

IMO Forrester and Windass were average tonight.

  3. One thing I noticed tonight, we had at least 6 or 7 corners in the first half and every one was put straight into the box, one of which which we got a goal from.

Second half Miller seemed to want to take short corners, even MacKay when he came on was putting the ball in.

A change in thinking or will we revert back to type on Saturday?

  4. Teams have now learned to press us higher up the field and put pressure on the back four playing the ball out. We are far too slow in our build up which then lets the opposition to get behind the ball.

St Johnstone were well drilled tonight and had the better chances in the second half to win the game,

We huffed and puffed and couldn't blow their house down.

    Frustrating and disappointing.

  5. Should come through. But far from gimmies. Poland have improved over the years but Denmark are one of these teams who can win matches on any day.

I don't bet on international games now, I cant get accumulators here on them, only singles and correct scores etc. To get a decent win you need a good 6 or 7 teams during the qualifiers.

It did come up although Iceland scored two goals in injury time to beat Finland.

  6. On reflection, there was one important factor in the 78/79 season often forgotten. Quite simply, it was a truly horrendous winter. The snow fell thickly on Hogmanay and remained on the ground for the next ten weeks. There was a Partick Thistle/Albion Rovers Scottish Cup tie postponed in excess of twenty occasions. From the middle of March until early May, three fixtures a week was the norm, I think Rangers played a dozen games in the last four weeks, the Scottish Cup final took three games before Rangers vanquished Hibs 3-2. Further, I remember Rangers sending the reserve squad up to Pittodrie for two games on the one day. The first at 11am was the reserve League Cup final, the second at 2pm was a reserve league fixture.

Talking of snow, our European Cup second round game, second leg at PSV's grouns was late November. We had drawn the first leg at Ibrox 0-0. PSV had NEVER been defeated at home in Europe. They had a wonderful side, including the Van Der Kirkoff brothers. I attended the game on the open terrace amid snow flurries. It was 2-2 going into the last quarter, the play had lengthened, but PSV were slowly dominating. Tommy McLean won the ball in the center circle, looked up as PSV's defence closed up on the offside, a deep running Bobby Russell ran through the back four as Calemero released a 40 yard diagonal pass. It was a foot race between Bobby and the PSV keeper, the Ranger won and passed the ball into the net from 30 yards to make it 2-3. We saw the ball coming towards us on that terracing, and we danced in the snow before the ball crossed the line.

Talking of snow, the quarter final home tie against Cologne was postponed on the Wednesday and played on the Thursday, Rangers had asked for volunteers to clear the pitch.
