  1. If anything fruitful comes of it I´ll be very surprised but maybe that´s because I´m just an old cynical B or possibly unfortunate experience watching Rangers and/or proposed partner mouthing off soundbites that the dumbed down masses cheer.

  2. Murray sees the season ticket renewal slowing up.

If figures I´ve heard about are correct ST´s are down some 3,500.

    3,500 x 500quid = 1,750,000 pounds

If he were to get a name he´ll estimate let´s say 50% of those who haven´t renewed could be talked round.

This would equate to roughly 875,000 pounds plus an oppourtunity to get back some popularity with those who have been "seeing the light" recently.

This would pay a good chunk of pizarro or other big names wages.

Are we seeing headlines generated by smoke and mirrors to stoke up interest and sell ST´s when he knows that will be gazumped and he can trot out the "living within our means but still trying" line.

    or

are we seeing a genuine atempt to sign the guy so as to arrest the tendency of the ST renewal decline.

  3. "Average" or "above average" players isn´t the point

It´s what they do when they arrive at Ibrox and too many don´t resemble the player they seemed to be, that is until they move on.

    Why????

  4. I agree. But at the moment we don't seem to have another striker who is any good! Prso wasn't fit enough. Novo has been playing on the right wing as Burke isn't good enough at the moment. That leaves Sebo, but he's not been given a chance to get to play with any of the others to get a partnership going.

We steam-rollered Tel Aviv playing a 4-5-1 with Fergie playing in behind Boyd, so the formation could work depending on how individuals play, the opposition play etc. It just didn't happen this time out though.

Difference was that against Hapoel we played Novo and Burke which helped link the midfield and attack aswell as give us some speed.

Against Osasuna it was Burke and Adam (no speed)

Also Hemdani played beside Weir and had A LOT less trouble with passing the ball out of defence than Ugo in the Osasuna game.

I maintain that the line-up in that home game against the spaniards robbed us of the slight chance we had to progress

  5. I think that's more than a bit to blame, but he's also inherited a very weak squad with limited options, particularly in midfield and up front.

Had to go 2 up front if Boyd was to play.

You have to chose formations based on the players available not force fit players into formations.

  6. You are choosing to highlight one game whilst I am talking in general terms - or are you saying that WS has been the problem why the players have, in the last 2 years, only chosen to play in OF games and Euro matches ?

The rest of the SPL games they haven't shown any desire (generally... there are of course exceptions).

    we´ve only played in 6 (OF/European games).

The 2 OF games, he did well although they weren´t up for the Ibrox game.

Out of 4 european games there was only 1 success, Hapoel (H). However for me the Osasuna home game having Boyd on his todd, isolated because BF couldn´t get near him and 2 slow centre-backs play deep so we allowed them to take the iniatative was negligent on WS part.

  7. The problem isnt WS (obviously)... it is lack of desire from the players, or at least some of them - it is painful to watch them pick and choose when to perform (Europe and OF games) and when to be completely inept - and it seems they carry out both scenarios en masse.

Hopefully WS and AM will instill the need to perform AT ALL TIMES at Rangers - and we can get back to humping teams the way we should be.

    Won't hold my breath though.

    Can´t agree

Walter´s team selection / formation at home to Osasuna was the biggest single reason for our elimination.

  8. I'll repeat Scott Brown is no world beater and has been transfered for a silly amount. What has he done to merit the same price tag as William Gallas?

He would have fitted nicely into our midfield because we need a creative type player who can fill in on the right. But its no serious loss IMO. There are SURELY better out there for that kinda money.

I can see the chant "What a waste of money" being chanted a few times next season.

The price was inflated but good players tend to go for a premium price because there are various clubs interested meaning a higher price.

Basically if we don´t pay over the odds ccasionally then it makes it harder to land the better players.

It could be argued that to pay more sometimes would give you better results on the field and financialy, eg. Sebo/Elmander.

This has to be tied into having a good scouting system, which we have not thus meaning getting our fingers burnt more than we should have over the years.

With SB, a scouting system wasn´t important as he was right under our noses thus reducing risk.

I await the probable foreign alternative to SB with a little trepidation.

  9. Agreed, I said in another thread that I reckon there will not be much between next seasons first pick XI's when both fit. It'll be the strength of squad that might be the telling factor over the whole season and in that area Celtic may be ahead of us.

TBH, with the end of the transfer window a long way a way (it´s not really begun yet), the unpredictability of how new players settle in and the tendency over recent years for favourites at the beginning of the season to dissapoint.....it´s early for conclusions .

  10. In the last OF, although arguably a "nothing" game, Fergie, Hemdani and Thomson totally dominated their midfield. Browm comes into stengthen their midfield with Lennon leaving and also possibly Gravesen. I'm not sure that this one signing gives hands the advantage to them in the middle of the park.

But what it does do, is not only give them more bite and energy in their midfield but it also deprives us of our number one midfield target.

    A negative double whammy.

Our midfield needs a box to box player with bite and some speed, as it is there are too many players that are too similar in style, it´s also pedestrian.

  11. The biggest part of the reported 12M is wages and are payable over 5 years.

So let´s say he´s there 3 years and gets a transfer to the premiership for 8M.

    That would be

    4.4M fee + (25,000 p/we x 156 = 3,900,000) = total outlay 8.3M

So IF he´s a success then it´s good business.

I tend to think Peter Liewell et al have been doing these type of sums, before presenting the cheque to Quinn for signing.

Huge pressure on a young player though so it´s not a given that he´ll be the player they hope for.

We, operating (up until now) at the lower end of the transfer market buy cheaply but we end up losing more money due to performance, pay-offs etc.

Elmander is an example, if we´d have bought him last season it´s possible that:-

    1. We´d have done better on the field/ PLG would still be there/ on course for better things and a professional club.

    2. That we´d have made a profit on the inevitable transfer (sooner or later) of Elmander to a bigger league.

    3. Instead, Sebo.....half the price BUT we´re going to lose on him bigstyle.

  12. well done Calsott !

IMO to make it complete and more informative about the financial situation you would have to include wages though.

Eg. Ferguson may be "effectively free" but his wages are high.

Other frees such as Hemdani, Darcheville and Ugo won´t be paid peanuts either.

  13. Saw the title of this thread and thought.....

then I considered the issue of the taxi driver and his sideline of being a Rangers scout and thought,....cannae do any worse than those at Ibrox or is it one, part-timer who works in poundstretcher´s Austrian shop and is close mates with the suntan kid !

    Then I said it´s friday,

I´ll call my burd Monica Belluci, dress her up as a painters radio, whisper "Awooga" in her lughole, pat her on the fanny then head downtown for a pint.

    Have a good weekend !

  14. What I would like is to see some sort of link set up with a European team, Serie B, Second div in Spain, something like that and send the young guys out there for a season. If you sent maybe 2 or 3 at a time they would have a bit of company to settle in and gain experience and at the same time gain a more well-rounded basis about the game. Lennon could be one of those - he seems to have a fair bit of talent and this could be a way to ensure he progresses well.

It would be even better to set up a club in the Spanish league, FC Naranja Bears and run a youth academy with a bilingual school.

Get the youths away from the scottish mentality and way of playing football.

The team would be made up of youth players plus 2 or 3 more experienced pros and have coachs from scotland and spain.

Bring Brazilians, Argentinians and Spaniards through aswell as scots.

Would cost a bomb but a few good players coming out of it would pay for it.

Pie in the sky maybe but why not.

  15. Sorry mate, should have explained that post better, was meaning Osasuna and our chances of signing that Carlos Cuellar guy.

Edit - i just checked, they are 7 points off relegation

It´s a long shot that they´ll be relegated but not impossible.

Just can´t see him coming to Scotland unless offered a lot of money and we ain´t exactly overflowing with the stuff.

The other thing is if he´s ambitious as a footballer will he want to play in spl ?
