McDOWALL adamant Kris will only play when he is ready

KENNY McDOWALL insists Rangers won't rush Kris Boyd back into action, despite the excellent progress he is making following a double hernia operation.

The 19-goal striker is on the verge of resuming full training following surgery in Manchester on January 12, two days after a 3-3 draw at Hamilton.

Ibrox manager Walter Smith expects the striker to be able to play in an as-yet unarranged bounce game early next week.

The player himself has been straining to get involved again and has been keen to be involved in this weekend's Scottish Cup tie at St Mirren.

But McDowall is adamant the Light Blues must be sensible and allow Boyd to complete his rehab then settle into a normal schedule again before fielding him once more.

Gers have a number of strikers available now, with Kenny Miller fit again and Kyle Lafferty and Nacho Novo likely to be in the squad despite picking up knocks in midweek.

First-team coach McDowall said: "We had Kyle and Nacho both straight in to see the physios yesterday morning and we're hopeful they'll be back for Saturday.

"We're delighted to have Kenny back too and with Andy Little and Steven Naismith coming on in midweek as well, we have options again up front.

"Kris is another who is coming along nicely, although he probably needs a little bit more time yet. Once he's back, it will be good to see him playing again.

"If it was up to Boydy, he'd have himself back in the team again this weekend but we need to be careful with him.

"Our medical boys will tell us when he is ready and as of yet, he hasn't joined in with the rest of the group for training.

"That needs to happen first before we can think about putting him back into a game situation again."
