How do you set it so users can read 10 or 20 posts but then must register?

I'm sure I've seen this message here when I've not logged in, something along the lines of "thanks for browsing, but please register to continue".

 

I'm trying to setup this for another forum but can't for the life of me find out how to do it - is it a setting in the admin control panel or is it a modification?
