FANS treated to feast of goals as Blues beat Dunfermline 7-2 to progress in Cup

RANGERS progressed through to the quarter-final stage of the League Cup after beating Dunfermline 7-2 in a hugely entertaining clash at Ibrox.

Having hammered four goals past Dundee United on Saturday the Light Blues looked hungry for more this evening with man-of-the-match Kyle Lafferty netting a superb hat-trick, Nikica Jelavic firing in two including a spectacular overhead kick and Madjid Bougherra and Steven Naismith also getting in on the act.

To be fair Dunfermline also played their part in making this a memorable Cup tie and when Joe Cardle scored his side's second to make it 3-2 at the start of the second-half they had a real chance of getting back in to the game.

In the end though it was Rangers that shifted through the gears and the second-half became an exhibition with Walter Smith's men creating chance after chance and enjoying long spells of possession.

Kyle Hutton was handed his first top team start as the Gers gaffer made seven changes to the team that beat the Arabs.

Vladimir Weiss, Davis, Bougherra and Jelavic were the only Gers that retained their places with Davis, who was stand-in captain for the night, partnering the impressive Hutton in the heart of the midfield while the Slovakian winger Weiss and Naismith filled the wide positions.

Lafferty replaced Kenny Miller up front and he partnered Jelavic against the First Division league leaders.

In defence Bougherra kept his place in the middle and he featured alongside Andy Webster who made his first appearance this season with captain Davie Weir rested.

Both full back positions also saw a switch in personel with Steven Whittaker, who was suspended, and Sasa Papac dropping out out of the side.

They were replaced by Andy Little at right back and Broadfoot who started on the left.

As with last season Neil Alexander was given the starting jersey between the sticks but he was a virtual spectator in a first-half his side dominated.

Dunfermline, however, enjoyed a bit of possession in the opening stages and when Lafferty played a slack pass to Hutton it was Davis who got his international teammate off the hook as he provided excellent cover to deny Nick Phinn an early goalscoring opportunity.

This was only a minor blip and it was not long before the Light Blues were piling on the pressure at the other end.

On seven minutes Broadfoot produced an excellent through ball to Jelavic in the box but the Croatian's clever cut back to Lafferty was blocked.

Davis then made a burst forward but after playing a neat one-two with Jelavic the club's no. 8 could not get enough power on his shot to beat Pars keeper Chris Smith at his near post.

It was one-way traffic at this stage but Dunfermline winger Wullie Gibson did have the vocal away support out of their seats on 19 minutes when he cut in from the right flank and his curling effort had to be watched closely by Alexander as it flew over his bar.

On 20 minutes it was Jelavic that broke the deadlock with an excellent goal.

Broadfoot was presented with the ball down the left wing and his delightful low cross behind the Dunfermline defence found the £4million striker who finished with aplomb from eight yards.

Just two minutes later and the home side had doubled their advantage and it was Lafferty this time that was on target.

The big Ulsterman weaved his way past three defenders and just when it looked as though he was going to lose possession he prodded the ball in to the corner of the net.

It was a fine finish from Laff but on 37 minutes it was Bougherra that showed a moment of sheer class.

Weiss swerved in a teasing near post cross from the right and Bougherra coolly flicked the ball in to the opposite corner of the goal with Smith helpless.

Dunfermline never let their heads go down and before referee Euan Norris' half-time whistle they had pulled one back.

Wullie Gibson delivered a deep cross from a corner and Callum Woods was left unmarked to head the ball past Neil Alexander.

The goals kept coming at the start of the second half and it was Dunfermline that sent their fans in to ecstasy when they got their second of the night.

Gibson produced a superb cross from the right and Joe Cardle was there to head the beyond Alexander who dived low to his right but could not get a hand on the ball.

The visitors now had real hope but just 30 seconds later boss Jim McIntyre was left tearing his hair out as his side's fragile defence conceded another.

Davis tried to loft a ball over Dunfermline's backline to Jelavic but it cannoned off the striker in to the path of Lafferty who slotted it home confidently with his left boot.

It was proving to be a terrific spectacle and Naismith and Bell then tested Smith and Alexander respectively with long range efforts.

And before the hour mark Jelavic had bagged his side's fifth with a tremendous finish which highlighted his international class.

Little passed inside to the big striker but when the ball popped up in the air his acrobatic overhead kick from 15 yards gave Smith no chance.

The game was now being played like a training match with Rangers looking confident and youngsters such as Little and Hutton calm and composed.

They were joined on 66 minutes by Kirkintilloch born Gregg Wylde.

The pacey winger replaced Jelavic and immediately darted down the left wing before sending over a teasing cross which flew across the six yard box.

With the game opening up further Lafferty took full advantage and his third goal was a cracker.

The Gers hitman linked up with Naismith on the edge of the 18 yard box before curling a low effort in to the corner of the net in front of the Copland Road Stand.

The scoring was not over there and with 76 minutes on the clock Broadfoot again delivered a great inswinging cross and Naismith rose majestically at the back post to angle his header across goal in to the top corner.

It was great stuff for the 23,120 fans to enjoy and both teams deserve credit for making this a game to remember.

Man of the Match: Kyle Lafferty - Big striker took his goals with confidence and thoroughly deserved his hat-trick.
