Show me a businessman that uses his own money and I'll show you a bust businessman.

 

This is the key in Whyte's modus operandi for me. We would all like him to write a cheque for £25m and pay it in to the current account but in the murky world of high finance this isn't how it's done. Most self made tycoons got there by investing borrowed money.

I think the problem is that the reality of proper successful business and finance is an anathema to most of us. It's really not what we want to see, even though it works - a bit like Walter Smith's tactics in Europe four years ago.
