Man Of The Match McKay Scores Winner For Scotland U19s

RICKY SBRAGIA last night hailed the character of his comeback kids.

Scotlandâ??s Under-19s were two down but lifted themselves off the canvas to triumph against a strong Swedish side in this friendly.

An own goal and strikes from new boy Mark Beck and Barrie McKay completed the dramatic turnaround.

Sbragia said: â??The boys showed character and resilience. Theyâ??ve always had that but I think thatâ??s backed up with more self-belief now.

â??Early on we showed Sweden too much respect but we upped the tempo in the second half and took it to them.

â??Theyâ??re a small team but we have a lot of heart.â?

Ahead of Mayâ??s UEFA Under-19 championship elite qualifying round against Belgium, England and Georgia, Sbragia recalled Falkirkâ??s Jay Fulton and Stephen Kingsley.

New discovery, Beck, the Sunderland-born Carlisle striker, was on the bench.

The Swedes seized the early initiative, with Hearts keeper Jack Hamilton doing well to save Victor Soderstromâ??s shot, while only a last-ditch block from Kingsley denied Alexander Fransson.

At the other end, a neat one-two between Celtic duo Jamie Lindsay and Stuart Findlay saw the lively Lindsay test Linus Muller in goal.

Sbragiaâ??s side were patient in possession and never settled for lumping the ball long, but they fell behind cruelly five minutes before the break. Kristoffer Olsson whipped in a free-kick from 25 yards and Alex Daveyâ??s attempted clearance cannoned off his shin beyond the helpless Hamilton.

Just after the restart it was 0-2 as Soderstrom drove forward and drilled home a low, unstoppable shot.

Scotland pulled one back with another freakish own goal. Evertonâ??s Matthew Kennedy fired over a dangerous corner which skidded in off the head of the back-tracking Victor Nilsson Lindelof.

Boosted by the goal, Scotland drew level as sub Beck struck after excellent work on the right flank from Lindsay.

They grabbed a deserved late winner when Billy Kingâ??s corner was headed down by Mark Oâ??Hara and man of the match McKay showed a poacherâ??s instinct to poke home.

We seem to hold our own at Youth level, from Schoolboy upwards.

Yet come to full International and we are hopeless. This has been the case for many years now, but somehow it is ignored.

Time for a radical rethink, with football people like Ferguson and Smith taking up the challenge.
