Play-offs? There are play-offs!

Recommended Posts

While listeneing to the commentary of our game yesterday, I noted the constant talk abou Berwick are still aiming for a play off place. Up till then I was thinking thta the first placed team/s go straight up and that's that. For why would there be all that "play-off" babble when it comes to reconstruction talk?

But lo and behold, play-offs appear to be very much alive in the SFL anyway ...

PLAY-OFF FORMAT

1 At the end of each season, the second bottom club in the First and Second Divisions and the second, third and fourth placed clubs in the Second and Third Divisions shall take part in a play-off competition to determine which further clubs are promoted and relegated.

2 The second lowest placed club in the First Division will play the fourth placed club in the Second Division on a home and away knock-out basis. The second lowest placed club in the First Division will play the second leg at home. The second highest placed club in the Second Division will play the third highest placed club in the Second Division on a home and away knock-out basis. The second highest club in the Second Division will play the second leg at home. The winners of the two ties will play off on a home and away knock-out basis. The home team in the first tie will be determined by the drawing of lots. The winner of this tie will play in the First Division in the following season. The second lowest placed club in the Second Division will play the fourth placed club in the Third Division on a home and away knock-out basis. The second lowest placed club in the Second Division will play the second leg at home. The second highest placed club in the Third Division will play the third highest placed club in the Third Division on a home and away knock-out basis. The home team in the first tie will be determined by the drawing of lots. The winner of this tie will play in the Second Division in the following season.

3 The winning club in each tie will be the club to score the greatest number of goals over the two matches. In the event that the aggregate scores are equal after the second leg of each tie in the play off competition extra time of 30 minutes (i.e. 15 minutes each way) will take place and thereafter if necessary kicks from the penalty mark will be taken in accordance with the Rules laid down by the International Football Association Board which will decide the winner.

So in essence, all this talk is actually about SPL-play-offs? Not making the Scottish game as such more attractive, as it the SFL has play-offs already installed? It's like all these grand plans about 8-8- splits making the game more attractive, ignoring the little fact that in the 12-12-18 format, these last 17 to 18 clubs would still face a long hard season and all but two have no benefit at all to look forward too.

Well, it might not be that simple, but it would be good if every now and then those people talking about it would actually tell about facts for all, not just for some.
