On This Day: 1991

Recommended Posts

ON THIS DAY in 1991 Rangers beat Aberdeen to win Walter Smith’s first title as manager.

Mark Hateley scored a brace to secure the league on the final day of the season and write himself into the Ibrox history books.

The Gers were cruising to three-in-a-row, but when Graeme Souness left to join Liverpool, Aberdeen, who were 10 points adrift with just seven games to go, closed the gap and headed to Glasgow only needing a point to lift the silverware.

It was to prove a dramatic and euphoric end to the campaign for the Gers, with Hateley, who joined from Monaco the previous summer, hitting both goals in a 2-0 win to deny the Dons and spark wild celebrations at Ibrox.

Never forget it as a fresh faced 16yo

I will never forget that either as all my Scottish friends had come over to Holland to play in a 5-a-side football tournament. Between games we were trying to get every bit of info possible. We had a wee celebratory drink after it.

Was this the game that Bomber Brown played with torn ligaments or something like that ? We were the walking wounded that day. Never forget Hateley's goals that day, was a nerve-wracking day until the 2nd went in !!
