League considers scrapping draws

Recommended Posts

The Football League board is to consider a proposal to scrap draws and decide matches by penalty shoot-outs, BBC Five Live understands.

The idea will be discussed by Football League chairmen and chief executives at a board meeting on Thursday.

No timescale has been given for implementing the change if the chairmen go ahead with the proposal.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: "I saw this in my first year managing in Japan - it did not have spectacular results."

He added: "In extra-time they played a sudden death goal and if no-one scored they had penalties.

"The draw is part of the culture of the game and I would not like that to disappear."

The idea was originally put forward in the recent Football League Fans Survey.

There are currently two proposals to be considered - a traditional penalty shoot-out or where a player would have eight seconds to try and score after receiving the ball on the half-way line.

Bournemouth boss Kevin Bond told the Daily Echo newspaper said: "Why can't we just have a draw?"

"I don't agree with it because I think it's too much of a radical change.

"I'm very open-minded and I think certain laws of the game need to move with the times but that would be too much of a drastic measure."

For some bizarre reason I take part in this football league survey every season, they email it to me!

But i didnt vote for sacking draws - that would be a terrible decision. They think it would make the games more exciting but it would be the opposite IMO. Smaller teams would play defensively and play for a penalty shoot out and hope they get there win that way.

Then you could see some average sides making the play offs via this way and possibly getting to the Premiership.

Its a no-no for me. Look at the CHelsea v Spurs 3-3 draw last week - great entertainment - some draws are fine.

Plus i like to have a flutter on 3 draws at the weekend and I always back Championship draws.

Getting rid of draws would be a disaster. Who thinks up these ideas?!?!

No idea - but the Americans have been doing this for a couple of seasons. Is a nonsense IMO.

Gribz... Re the point scoring and teams holding out for a penalty I would think that the way they would operate it would be similar to NHL (Ice Hockey).

If you lose in 90 mins, zero points

If you win in 90 mins, 3 points

If you win after pens, 2 points

If you lose after pens, 1 point

I think that this should minimise the leagues becoming a farce. I am obviously guessing though - but this would make most sense.

Makes no sense to me that you get 0 points for getting beat in a pen shoot-out but a team that wins that pen shoot out gets 3 !
