Daniel Candeias denied Europa League debut due to Turkish red tape

Portuguese winger left disappointed as Ibrox club prepare themselves for a £2million double swoop on Ibrox by former boss Mark Warburton.

The dreams of a Euro debut for Rangers new boy Daniel Candeias have been dashed by Turkish red tape.

The Portuguese winger has spoken in his homeland in glowing terms about his first appearance for his new club at Ibrox on Thursday night.

New look Rangers will take on Luxembourg side Progres Niederkorn in front of a capacity crowd in their first Euro match for six years.

But former Benfica winger Candeias cannot play in the Europa League qualifier because his registration will not be released by his last club, Alanyaspor, until July 1.

Gers boss Pedro Caixinha said: “Daniel is the only registration we could not get because the transfer window is different.“In these situations UEFA should have a type of exception because the timings are different in different countries.

“Daniel was in Turkey and he won’t receive his clearance in the system until July 1 so we could not make him available for the first qualifying round. We hope to have him available for the second qualifier.”

Candeias, 29, signed a two-year deal with Rangers earlier this month and was looking forward to European competition for the first time since he played in the Europa League with Portuguese side Nacional in 2010.

He insists the Rangers team, extensively overhauled in the last month by Caixinha, will come good even if it may need some time to adapt.

Candeias said: “The stadium will be full for this game. Here, they sell tickets before the season starts and it will be packed as usual.“I’m looking forward to my debut at Ibrox, it’s going to be beautiful. I’ve felt the fans’ tremendous feeling and now Rangers have returned to Europe they are looking forward to Thursday – and so are we.

“We want to play in our stadium and give a first joy to fans in this inaugural game of the season. It is normal that at the beginning we will not yet be physically fit.

“However, the team has already completed 24 training sessions. In the beginning it will cost a bit but on Thursday we will present some of the ideas the coach intends to implement.

“We want to win because Rangers are a club used to winning. It’s going to be a spectacular day. I have been well received by all the people, my team-mates and staff of the club.”

It's disappointing for him and for us but all things being equal this should be a comfortable win regardless and hopefully the red tape will have been cleared away for the next round.
