Canadian organisers have blamed Rangers fans not buying tickets for the cancellation of the glamour friendly between the Ibrox side and Benfica.

Rangers were furious when the match in Hamilton, Ontario was cancelled just six days ahead of the scheduled encounter on Friday. They insisted they would be taking legal advice and were unhappy at Portuguese giants Benfica too.

Benfica responded by blaming the local organisers, Elite Soccer Entertainment, for not fulfilling their contractual obligations.

It caused a major headache too for local turf company, Greenhorizons Sod Farms, who were left with 100,000 square feet of grass, which they had planned to lay on top of the artificial pitch at Tim Horton's Field for the Eusebio Cup clash.

However, North American organisers have now revealed slow ticket sales were to blame. And they blamed Scottish expats in particular.

Elite Soccer Entertainment's CEO Fernando Pacheco explained: "Portuguese fans had been responding to the visit, Rangers fans had not."Twenty seven per cent of Hamilton has a Scottish background."After what they've been through the past few years and fought back, there should be support. But they were not buying tickets."

"..ESE has the outmost respect for Benfica, Rangers and especially the fans. There has been numerous rumors and speculations blaming Rangers supporters for not purchasing enough tickets. That is a false statement and Elite Soccer Entertainment would like to put it to rest..."

“We deeply regret what has happened, and we would like to extend our sincerest apologies for any inconveniences that may have been caused to the clubs involved and to their supporters.

“As well to Eusébio da Silva Ferreira’s family, all of whom deserve our greatest respect to Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Glasgow Rangers, and institutions of international renown we wish the biggest success and we hope to work together sometime in the near future.”

Oh dear!, Record caught telling lies again it seems!.
