As a young boy you had to keep your arms in front of you with your forearms against the person's back in front of you to stop getting crushed. We just seemed to accept it as normal in the "good old days".

 

Yes my dad used to always tell me to keep my arms crossed in front of me so as I could make some room from the person in front and protect my chest.
