For all the shock results, it's looking like normality will have reasserted itself in time for the QFs. The only deviation from what you'd have expected is probably going to be Croatia instead of Belgium/Germany.

    So much for that prediction!

this world cup is everything that is wrong with the modern world in microcosm.

    not watching it.

I started off thinking that way, but I've been working from home and have been gradually drawn into it.

The first two matches today were belters.

Really is depressing reading - added to Motherwell being dumped out by a League Of Ireland team - Scottish Football is a laughing stock.

It's worth noting that the two teams we eliminated from the CL qualifiers are both sitting pretty in the Europa: unbeaten, will both very probably progress beyond the group stage, and have a set of results we'd all be content with.

Would Gio be getting it in the neck if we were in USG's current position in the Europa League? Would USG have fared any better than us if they were in our CL group?

There's a gulf in prize money between CL and EL, but there's also a converse gulf in enjoyment that makes it barely worth it.

True. Two relaxing 4-0s make a pleasant change from nervous 1-0s.

Also, domestically, over the period since our last loss, our main rivals have gone from scudding everyone out of the park, to one loss and two narrow wins - the most recent relying on an OG and a last gasp winner.

I think it's fair to say we're coping with the midweek CL games better than they are. I'm hopeful we can take the lead before the winter shut down.

Is this for real? Iconic indeed...🤣🤣🤣😋🤣

I suppose it's possible to be iconic in a bad way. Like, and icon that's emblematic of a misplaced sense of hope, or a premature sense of achievment.

List in order of value per game, per league - Top 10:

Rank League Country UEFA Rank Number of Live Games Value Per Game
    1. Premier League England 1st 200 £8.00m
    2. Bundesliga Germany 4th 306 £3.02m (€3.59m)
    3. La Liga Spain 2nd 380 £2.18m (€2.60m)
    4. Serie A Italy 3rd 380 £2.05m (€2.44m)
    5. Ligue 1 France 5th 380 £1.28m (€1.53m)
    6. English Football League England N/A 168 £708,000
    7. Scottish Premiership Scotland 9th 54 £555,000
    8. Primeira Liga Portugal 6th 306 £493,000 (€588,000)
    9. Brasileirao Brazil N/A 380 £434,000 (R$2.734m)
    10. Major League Soccer United States N/A 476? £430,000 ($525,000)

When it's laid out like that, you can't really complain.

  7. The week's European results turned out perfectly - the complete hero/zero flip from our disappointment in Belgium and DU "flying the flag for Scottish football". It's nice to think of Spence and his ilk being thoroughly sickened by that most brutal shafting. They actually believed they were going to get through! 😂

Having said that, in general, I wouldn't be upset if Scottish diddy teams started regularly making it to the Conference League Group stages. I wouldn't class that as a meaningful success in Europe - the diddy prize money would barely put a dent in the financial gap between us and them. Pluses for us: there's a possibility that they'd contribute to the coefficient, and their fight in the league would suffer as they'd be fatigued by midweek excursions to the arse end of Europe and horsings from the pot A club in their group.

Probably find the Belgian lads will be favourites after our unconvincing display on Saturday.

Their league form hasn't been especially convincing either. Drew their opening game 1-1  then a 1-0 victory - neither against Belgian title contenders. They might be one season wonders. 🤞

Things would get pretty interesting if the American's got a hold of the Edinburgh clubs and put their know how into them. To go off on a bit of a tangent, the MLS clubs are worth hundreds of millions of dollars in some cases yet have absolutely bang average playing squads. So it'll be interesting seeing them operate in the SPL.

Although what he's stated in the article is just simple fact, it is all about the Rangers, it always has been.

  10. Is anyone else having trouble with this? Very frequently (most of the time) when I click on a thread I'm hit with the "Something went wrong. Please try again." page. Refreshing the page usually takes me to the posts. Seems to be linked to there being new posts to view.

I'm having the same issue on a windows computer and my android phone.
