  1. The Everton run-in is interesting.

They have Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal which you wouldn't expect much from, but their other games are all against teams around the relegation zone: Luton, Sheffield Utd, Forrrrrrest and Brentford.

Eminently winnable, but also quite dangerous.

2 defenders and the keeper played the ball.

Stevie Clifford argued that attempted blocks and clearances doesn't change the phase of play. so the ref was correct to overturn the goal. I've not seen any references to rules that state that, but I think he did a bit of reffing, so he may know better than us, but I'd tend to agree with you.

Var can only be used for fouls in the current phase of play. Two Celtic defenders had played the ball before Dessers scores. The ‘foul’ was committed in an earlier phase of play

var can only return to previous phases for red cards, violent conduct & mistake identity I believe.

Dermot couldn't bring himself to say so, but his explanation suggests that he thought it was virtually re-refereeing the game, which should not be (is not?) allowed. It's the subjectivity of where the phase of play ends and begins.

Of course, with the standard of our referees it's going to go against us.

(He did think - as we all do - that it was a foul, but the referee played on in the moment.)

Dessers and Lundstram played well with both Matondo and Sima making a big difference with their pace and direct running but for me there can be only one winner and that is big Dujon Sterling.

His first pass aside i though he was by far our best player.

Except for when he gave the ball away leading to their first, or when he was involved in the comedy of errors for their third?

It has to be a clear and obvious error. Compare and contrast to the handball in the game at Parkhead.

I accept that there's an argument that it was that, but it also has to be in the same phase of play, and I'm not convinced it was. I'd have thought a new phase of play starts when the first cross is blocked

I don't think it does, because of the goal. Don't quote me on that, though - I'll wait for Dermot.

The referee may have seen it, but he did make the wrong decision as it was a foul. That is a clear and obvious error. That's just my opinion.

Yes, for me, I think the length of time between the plays is the issue. If VAR have got it wrong, that will be where it is.

The ref clearly saw it so was it an obvious error? I don't think it was.

I also don't believe it was in the same phase of play, based on the way that the EPL is reffed, but I'm not clued up about the exact rules on that.

I think they go back to it because the end result was a goal, even if the referee did see it.

I'll wait for Dermot at 11:00 before speculating, though.
