  1. xG since Clement took charge:

Our xG is still good (outwith some outliers, like Kilmarnock and Dundee), but the real issue over the last 5-6 games is the xGA we are we are allwoing our opponents. That Ross County game (2.81 xGA) is atrocious, but 1.36 against Kilmarnock and 0.99 against Motherwell is poor.

We've never been clinical, so when that combines with a more porous defence, it spells danger.

Agree about Sima, but every passing game I find myself wondering just how a scout saw Silva and thought thats a player to spend £35-40 million on. Don't get me wrong, in the right league and with the right players around him, I think he could be a great player, but never a £20million+ player

Because he was 17 at the time.

I've been trying to put together a quick chart of the minutes players by each player, finding it hard to find reliable stats. The below is domestic league stats only so not ideal.. I'd want to include cups / Europe and ideally be able to indicate for each player games missed through injury to differentiate between non selection reasons. But its all I've got.

Yilmaz has played more than Barisic?!

    Whaa...?!

Stats wise no doubt. Those are envied by most wingers and even strikers. Performance-wise ... you are the chap with the stats, what's his cross-/pass-completion ratio? Is it wrong to wish that a defender is doing his prime job first and foremost? There are reasons why concede bad goals time and again, and since "we play as a team", we also lose as a team. Our centre-halfs are more often exposed for a reason. Hence, I suggested a 3-at-the-back and let Tavernier run his race on the right wing as per usual. We need to plug the gaps.

As for the rubbish ... no-one wants to get rid of Tavernier, I would assume?

He has a cross-accuracy rate of 29.5%, which puts him in the 75 percentile in the league.

Just because he has flaws in his game doesn't mean he's not one of our best players.

Yes, our whole press is awful, which is why our midfield gets exposed and then our defence.

    I would like to see a back-three.

He is one of our best players despite his defensive weaknesses. What does that say about the others?

Defensive weaknesses are fatal for a defender.

Only if defenders just defend which hasn't been the case for 20+ years.

    See Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Approaching prime for a ‘keeper, surely.

That's true, but teams don't pay a premium for a 'Keeper at such an age.

The only comparable transfer was Pope (30) to Newcastle for £9M and he was a standout in the league.

  7. 3 minutes ago, Gonzo79 said:

I'm not convinced he is.  His positioning and inability to tackle are factors in a lot of goals we concede.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also suspect defensively.

Just because he has flaws in his game doesn't mean that he's not one of our best players.

He arguably still has at least 5 years at the top level in him and could still easily be picked in the England Euros squad so isn't just a quality 'keeper but fills Euro quotas as well.

£10m is pocket change for English sides.

It's a good argument, but I still do not see that kind of money involved.

English 'Keepers transferred in the last 4-5 years:

    Name Age Year Joined Fee
Tom Heaton 33 19/20 Aston Villa Premier League €8.80m
Aaron Ramsdale 22 20/21 Sheff Utd Premier League €20.50m
Jack Butland 27 20/21 Crystal Palace Premier League €1.10m
David Button 31 20/21 West Brom Premier League €1.10m
Aaron Ramsdale 23 21/22 Arsenal Premier League €28.00m
    Joe Hart 34 21/22 Celtic Premiership €1.20m
Nick Pope 30 22/23 Newcastle Premier League €11.50m
Karl Darlow 32 22/23 Hull City Championship Loan fee: €157k
Daniel Bentley 29 22/23 Wolves Premier League €57k
Dean Henderson 26 23/24 Crystal Palace Premier League €17.50m
James Trafford 20 23/24 Burnley Premier League €17.30m
    Karl Darlow 32 23/24 Leeds Championship €400k

The blues go for high transfer fees because they are young (except Heaton, maybe Pope) and going to be first-choice.

The oranges go for pittance because they are older and going to be back-ups.

    Joe Hart. :D

I think Butland is in the Orange category. IMO.

I've got a feeling we might punt Butland to help finance any new signings. He's our biggest asset by a country mile.

Biggest asset in terms of his importance to the team? Sure.

Biggest asset in terms of monetary value? No. He's a 31-year-old 'Keeper. He's not worth much.

it's sticks in my craw that Keltic would benefit from automatic qualification for the CL, given that the co-efficient was earned entirely by us, while they did hee-haw about improving it.

    It's our own fault.

    @Rousseau- serious question

Would you keep those 5 and if so why?

I think it's a given that the loanees and OOC players will all leave, so what 5 outwith those should be shown the door.

I'd keep Yilmaz (good player, still very young)

Goldson is one of our best defenders, so I'd still use him - but we do need better competition. There's no real value in letting him go as we're not getting a fee for him - other than freeing up wages.

    Dowell and Wright can go.

Lammers I'd keep. I'd like to see him get a run in the #9 position.

Caveat: I'd sell everyone, anyone if there is a decent bid. :D

Our press has regressed dramatically. 1st half against Celtic, only Dessers and Lundstrum were attempting any press at all. Rest of team retreated into our half when ever we were out of possession.

Not sticking up for Lundstrum but until a few weeks ago, he was being touted as POTY.......

I'm only picking at a single metric.

His other defensive stats are quite good.

    He is also always available.

  13. 14 minutes ago, Scott7 said:

Tavernier only tackled twice in the whole game? And he only won one? What sort of fullback is that? You would think he’d been playing behind a dominant midfield and rampant attack. Or maybe Dundee played with no left flank.

    Sterling won 1/1.

    Goldson won 2/2.

    Souttar won 2/3.

    Lundstram won 2/2.

  14. 9 minutes ago, CammyF said:

Or with us essentially only playing 2 in midfield, we are being overran in this area?

I don't think so. Many teams - see Leverkusen - play with two.

I think it's the press: teams can break our press quite easily.

It's also a specific problem in Lundstram's game; it has been for a while: Even in Beale's diamond he was quite poor in this metric. He is actually in the lowest 3% in the whole league for this metric.

Either he is particularly bad at it, or our press is so poor they are exposed. I lean towards it being a bit of both.

  15. The stats also show that Lundstram was dribbled past twice.

We've discussed this before, haven't we?

It looks to be an issue with his reading of the game or positioning.
