Six Youths To Leave

SIX youth players have been released by Rangers as the Light Blues continue to shape their professional pool for next season.

Goalkeeper Blair Currie, who was on the bench for eight first-team fixtures in December and January, is leaving Murray Park and is poised to join Hamilton Accies.

Gregor Fotheringham, who spent time on loan at Forfar this year and started three Second Division games for them, is also moving on.

Completing the list of those departing are Northern Ireland youth cap Matty Clarke, Travis Gregory, Jordan Wilson and Glody N’Tumba.

Can't say that I disagree with much of what he says ...

Our performance in the UEFA Under-19 European Championship Qualifying Elite Round in Belgium last week turned out to be another reality check for Scottish football.

While we have to be mindful of the mitigating factors – injuries to Marcus Fraser, Joe Chalmers, Callum Paterson, Barry McKay and Islam Feruz, and the unavailability of Alex Harris due to his William Hill Scottish Cup final appearance for Hibernian – the reality is the group did not perform as expected.

Only in the opening half of our first match, against the host nation, did we perform to our capabilities by taking a two-goal lead before losing that advantage and settling for a draw. The argument that our players tired after a long season does not wash: the other nations can say the same and across the continent the genuinely top players are aware that to reach the top and stay there, you need to be committed all year round.

Even with a healthy percentage of regular Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League players, like Ryan Fraser, Mark O’Hara, Steven Kingsley, John McGinn, Matthew Kennedy, Ryan Gauld and Lewis McLeod, it is clear that we have some way to go to match the best young talent across the continent.

fraser

Ryan Fraser was a bright spark in an otherwise gloomy match against Georgia. Collectively, they were better than us and it is no surprise that many of their squad have graduated from their excellent under-17s squad of a few years ago.

Obviously the 3-0 defeat to England attracted most attention but it is the wrong comparison to be drawn. None of the players who played against us had a minute of first-team experience in the Barclays Premier League but they demonstrated that in terms of physical and technical ability, we need to improve.

The law of averages suggests a country with a population 10 times our own will have a greater pool of talent. The fact that the Barclays Premier League is awash with money is a blessing and a curse: while the academy system is well-funded, with each club spending an average of £2.3m per year on their youth development, the transfer fees and astronomical salaries spent on the world’s biggest names has reduced opportunities for young English players to emerge in the first teams.

The challenge for us is to maximise our opportunities for our young players and with more exposure to top-quality competition, we can bridge the gap. Technique, decision making and speed are areas we need to improve upon across the board but it needs to be reiterated that the seven Regional Performance Schools are designed to give players from 12 additional skills development time at a key age. Centralised regional gatherings are also a key next step to ensure we continue to evolve our Best v Best ethos.

We are playing catch-up, of that there is no question. We have taken the first steps towards planning for a better future but it requires renewed support from the government and local authorities – and the support of our clubs – to assist the national game in providing more opportunities and better facilities for our future talent to thrive.

12′s Take On Dumbarton 13′s

Report on tonight's game and Scotland U15's squad

http://rfcyouths.wordpress.com/2013/06/06/12s-take-on-dumbarton-13s/

Found an interesting article on the boy from Uppingham Town FC. I admit I haven't seen him play, but its still good to know he is a bluenose.

A teenager from Rutland has been called up for Scotland’s U15 squad after being talent-spotted at training sessions with premier league clubs.

Jordan Neil, from Caldecott, plays for Uppingham Town’s U16s and Leicester City’s elite squad as well as attending sessions with West Bromwich Albion and Everton.

But despite the attention from major clubs, he says he was still stunned when the Scottish FA called.

“I was gobsmacked when they said they wanted me to come for training,” said the Uppingham Community College pupil. “I didn’t know what to say.”

Scottish scouts had been tipped off about Jordan’s potential and they contacted West Brom to pass on reports.

Now Jordan will take part in a 40-strong Scottish training camp at the end of this month.

If that goes well he may then represent Scotland in a Home Nations tournament before a tour of Italy.

Jordan, who plays up front or wide on the left, only joined Uppingham Town U16s midway through last season but scored nine goals in his seven appearances. He has added nine in 10 to that tally this season as the side sit mid-table in just their second season.

Uppingham coach Richard Lewin said: “He made an instant impact, becoming our leading goalscorer.

“He’s one of the youngest members and playing against lads much older than him.

“He is very talented. When we speak with coaches from the teams we have played against they always pick him out.”

Jordan began playing football when he was five in his native Scotland and his parents, Cameron and Natalie, paid credit to Uppingham for helping Jordan to continue playing after they moved to Rutland.

Beyond the national squad selection, Jordan is on the radar of several top English an Scottish clubs.

“Everton was the best. The set-up and training was brilliant.”

Given the choice, however, he admitted Rangers would always be his first choice.
