EXCLUSIVE: Roy Hodgson appointed new Liverpool manager

Recommended Posts

KOPTALK can exclusively reveal that Roy Hodgson has been appointed as the new manager of Liverpool Football Club.

The Fulham manager was always the bookies favourite to land the job despite the Reds having considered several alternatives including former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini.

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish wanted the job but was turned down flat by the current Anfield board. One of Hodgson's first jobs will be to try and persuade his friend to remain at the club.

Dalglish has so far rejected the opportunity to be appointed as Director of Football but maybe he will reconsider when things settle down.

Hodgson has agreed terms with Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow but no official announcement will be made until Fulham and Liverpool finalise a compensation payment.

Later today Hodgson is due to talk to senior members of the Liverpool coaching staff to help him come to a decision as to who should be his assistant.

Hodgson is not on Merseyside at this time and is unlikely to be until everything is official. That doesn't need to be rushed though with Liverpool's players currently down in South Africa or away on their holidays.

Although Liverpool have finally found their new manager, there's still no sign of any new owners. As previously reported by KOPTALK, Liverpool have recently lost Sheikh Khalifa of Abu Dhabi and at least one Indian bidder as a result of the ridiculous valuation of the club.

Is he more likely to win them the title than Benitez? Absolutely not imo

For all the praise he has received at Fulham, they've only won 7 out of 48 away games in the EPL under him

Cant see this on any other football pages.

Like UCB says it will be good to see him get a chance, its good a few clubs are offering managers a chance now. However you feel it could be down to Liverpools finances.

Probably wouldnt be near there top 5 choices had they been in a position to play Champions League football and had better finances.

BBC News now linking Hodgson with the job...

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has remained tight-lipped over rumours linking him with the vacant Liverpool job. Rafael Benitez, who has since joined Inter Milan, left Anfield earlier this month and Hodgson has been widely touted as his potential successor.

"I'm Fulham manager. I'm perfectly happy at Fulham," the BBC World Cup pundit told presenter Gary Lineker in Cape Town.

"There's a lot of speculation but I can't enlighten you," he added.

After six years in charge, Benitez left Liverpool by mutual consent, with managing director Christian Purslow and former boss Kenny Dalglish given the task of finding his replacement.

Judging by his body language, he was telling the truth about no approach from the club and that all the news he gets is through "the press"

Dalglish managed the side from 1985 to 1991, during which time they won the league three times.

He is now an ambassador for the club's academy and has been tipped for a possible return to the managerial hot-seat by the likes of former team-mates Mark Lawrenson and Bruce Grobelaar.

The hugely-experienced Hodgson has been in charge of Fulham since December 2007 and in December 2009 he signed a new 12-month rolling contract.

The 62-year-old's achievement in guiding Fulham to the final of the Europa League saw him named manager of the year by the League Manager's Association.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill's name has also been mentioned, although he has recently committed his future to the club after showdown talks with owner Randy Lerner.

Former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, who is currently without a club, has also been mentioned as has ex-Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini, former Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink and Croatia coach Slaven Bilic.

The agent of former Holland and Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard has also moved to distance his client from the speculation.

"Rumours linking Frank to Liverpool are just that, rumours," Perry Overmeers told BBC Sport.

"Frank is the type of person who likes to fulfil his obligations and he has one year left on his contract with Galatasaray. There has been no contact from Liverpool."

If you'd said to Liverpool fans 6 months ago that Rafa would be gone in the summer and replaced by Woy Hodgson, there would've been mass suicides on Merseyside
