Celtic manager Neil Lennon has revealed he is close to landing Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy and hopes to conclude a deal in the next few days. The forward has been linked with an Ã?£1.3 million move to Parkhead in recent weeks. Speaking after Celtic’s friendly match with Philadephia Union, Lennon said that the squad could be strengthened before the end of their North American tour. In addition to South Korea World Cup players Ki Sung-Yueng and Cha Du-Ri joining the squad after an extended break, the manager said there could be new faces appearing in the USA. “Juarez is pretty close, “ Lennon told philly.com, referring to the impending transfer of Efraim Juarez from UNAM Pumas. “We think we’re pretty close with Murphy as well, from Sunderland. I think so.” Asked if Murphy would be joining the club in America, Lennon was cautious but said: “If we can get it done.” The manager revealed that he had been tracking Murphy’s progress since seeing him play for Republic of Ireland a few years ago. Since then, Lennon said he had seen him play for Ipswich while on loan and felt he could do a job in the SPL. “He’s quick, he’s 6 foot 2 or 3 and I’ve watched him for a few years,” Lennon said. “I think he could take the hits for us up here.” Murphy began his career with Luton Town and signed his first professional deal with Waterford United in Ireland before moving to Sunderland in 2005. The 27-year old had a loan spell with Ipswich last year and scored six times in 18 appearances. The player won his first international cap in Republic of Ireland’s friendly against Ecuador in 2007 and has picked up eight more caps since. Murphy is believed to be keen on a move to Parkhead and should the clubs agree on a fee the forward could agree terms and complete a medical in time to join up with Celtic in America before their tour finishes on July 22. 0 Quote Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The quote " He could take hits for us" can only serve to reinforce their well known desire to play fast flowing, fluent football.
