Old Firm OPTA stats from Sunday.

Recommended Posts

I wish we would face the fact, since 2nd January they have been improving, they are full of confidence, and have some decent players.

Taking into account we are not improving, our confidence seems to be dented, and we have lost our best goalscorer.

Although I still think we will win the League, I would not like to put money on it.

Opta have said on Twitter these are not their stats and question their authenticity.

Have to say I was sceptical about these stats because other sources are saying we had 41 or 42 percent possession while these say we had less than 30%.

At the end of the day, the stats which really matter are our league stats so far this season and all things considered we're actually doing extremely well despite having had so many worrying performances. Anyone who takes the following link can easily and directly compare our overall league stats so far this season with the same period from last season and you'll see that we're actually doing very well points wise. We've even won one more game despite having played two less! http://stats.football365.com/dom/SCO/teams/Rangers.html

The only slightly worrying aspect in comparing those league stats to last season is that we've leaked 5 more goals over the period despite having played 2 games less and that seriously screws with our goal diff' when added to the fact that we've scored 8 goals less over the period. Maybe we can rattle in a bunch of goals against Motherwell and sort it out a wee bit....

Executive summary of our league stats -

This season so far - 22 games played = 53 points

Last season till now - 24 games played = 55 points

The truth of the matter is that points-wise we're doing better than we were at this point last season even although we have a smaller squad and have lost some key players from last season.

Whilst that does indeed suggest we have done better than last season the reality is that it is all about winning trophies, the SPL specifically. And Celtic have, quite obviously, improved - to the extent that this season they are very much challengers.

We need to keep winning and our current form would suggest that will be far more of a struggle for us than it will be for Celtic.

Celtic have, quite obviously, improved - to the extent that this season they are very much challengers.

That's basically it in a nutshell. After 24 games last season Celtic only had 47 points whereas after 24 games this season they have 58 points. That is an absolutely massive improvement. Not only do we need to win our games in hand, but we need to rise to the challenge of showing a vastly improved opponent why we're Champions by taking something in ALL of our remaining OF SPL games and dropping very few points from now till the end of the season. It won't be easy with our small squad and fixture headache though...

At the end of the day this argument is pointless.

Both the old firm go up and down, fluctuating in mediocrity. It has been the case since the end of season 2002/03, the last time both sides were particularly impressive and of a quality that represented both clubs size and stature.

League cup final 02/03:

Rangers: Klos, Ricksen, Amoruso, Moore, Bonnissel (Ross 64), Caniggia, Arteta (Konterman 78), Ferguson, de Boer (Arveladze 86), Mols, Lovenkrands.

Celtic: Douglas, Mjallby (Petrov 88), Balde, Valgaeren, Smith (Sylla 66), Lennon, Lambert, Sutton (Maloney 80), Thompson, Larsson, Hartson.

2002/03 does not seem that long ago
