Strathclyde Police officers to target 'Old Firm bigots'

A specialist team of police will be deployed at the next Rangers v Celtic game in a bid to tackle sectarianism.

Strathclyde Police said 35 officers would mingle with the crowd during the Easter Sunday match at Ibrox to target fans involved in sectarian behaviour.

The move follows both clubs endorsing a government-led anti-bigotry plan.

This was drawn up in the aftermath of last month's ill-tempered Scottish Cup replay at Celtic Park which saw scenes of unrest within the stadium.

The game, on 2 March, saw three red cards, several touch-line and tunnel confrontations and 34 arrests as Celtic ran out 1-0 winners.

Action plan

The following day, Strathclyde Police, which described the scenes as shameful, requested a summit with both clubs, the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish government.

All parties later agreed an action plan to tackle Old Firm-related disorder.

This included a re-enforced code of conduct for players and officials and greater enforcement of existing legislation to deal with sectarianism and drink related offences.

Strathclyde Police now plan to take greater action on the latter measure by deploying officers among the crowd during the Easter Sunday clash.

Anyone caught singing inflammatory songs could be arrested and face a football banning order which would exclude them from games for up to 10 years.

Who will the attention be focussed on though... more than likely the 40k Gers fans because, lets not forget, the CFC fans are merely enjoying the "craic" and singing "folk songs" from the "old country".

Will be a crock of shite, as per usual.

I think this is more of an idle threat than anything else. Even if they spread out some undercover pigs around Ibrox, they'd be spotted and outed as soon as they made one single arrest. If they really do have men undercover they'll probably target the sections TBO & UB are in with a good number of their troops but they'll probably be easy to spot and they can't arrest very many people at once anyway.

I'd be interested to know how many of their people Strathclyde Police put into the Broomy that day and also what religious faith the officers are. After all, it would be nice to think that whatever they do is at least balanced and fair.

Not being funny but there's a lot of them mingled in with us at those games anyway. This is nothing new. I'm guessing this is a PR exercise at putting a bit of pressure on the fans by letting them know they are there.

Don't worry

Why let it bother you so much? Go and enjoy the game and you'll forget about the cops in the stands. By the way, there can be cops in the stands AND in the streets.

I dont think that Ian was reacting so much to the Strathclyde's finest but more as to how the Tims have ensured that the game day experience for football supporters is now nowhere near as enjoyable as it once was.

It isnt sectarian, it isnt racist, it isnt bigotted - it is 90 minutes of football banter against your arch rivals. At least that is how it should be INSIDE the stadium.

I do like it.

I won't be getting the OT. I'm lateshift on the 24th so will miss the game which I'm not to bothered about. The thing that annoys me is that the high heed yins at Strathclyde Police who agree to the OF playing when the next day is a bank holiday.
