James traynor piece in the record

Recommended Posts

Again, we should not forget about Traynor either. He's a sports reporter who wants to sell his stories. Anyone on here will vividly remember the utter rubbish that sprang from other articles of his.

Rangers, or rather Graeme Souness created the entity that is Traynor.

A quarter of a century past, Traynor(he was James in those days) had just become the Herald's Chief Football Writer; and he set out to make a name for himself. He penned a few spikey articles, hung out the bait and Souness took it. A stand up spat in the press room saw Souey call Traynor, "a little Socialist" and ban him from Ibrox.

Result for Traynor; immediately, he moved from the inside back page(in those days, the Herald back page was devoted totally to TV listings and critique) of the Herald to the front page. Traynor and the Herald utilised the NUJ and it was the story that kept on giving. Six weeks later, Traynor was back in and on his way to prominance. A huge tactical error.

Walter Smith knew how to deal with troublesome journos, he ignored them.
