Everton job too big for Celtic boss Lennon..........

...............says Toffees legend Sharp

Everton legend Graeme Sharp believes Celtic boss Neil Lennon lacks the managerial clout to earn a crack at the Goodison hotseat.

Former Scotland international Sharp won two Premiership titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup Winnersâ?? Cup medal in 11 years with the Toffees.

And the Glaswegian says the SPLâ??s reputation as a one-team league has damaged any hopes the Northern Irishman harbours of landing a major Premiership job in the short term.

â??I would be very surprised if Neil got anywhere near Everton,â?? said Sharp. â??He has done OK at Celtic, but Iâ??m not sure he has done enough to warrant the Everton job.

â??Massive though Celtic are, this is a very difficult job in following Davie Moyes.

â??Everyone knows what has happened at Rangers. Peopledown here just expect Celtic to win the Scottish Premier League.

â??That might make people a little bit derogatory about Neilâ??s abilities as a manager. I think a lot of people are thinking: â??Rangers have been demoted, of course Celtic will win the leagueâ?.

â??Itâ??s not necessarily the case that they are right. Some teams this year have done quite well, Stuart McCallâ??s Motherwell for example. But there is the perception down here that the SPL is a one-team league.â??

Moyes is believed to have recommended Malky Mackay, another former Celtic player, as his successor.

The two men have much in common, both in their background and playing careers.

As Lennon also attracts attention from former club Leicester City, however, his record of European success on a limited budget has caught Evertonâ??s eye.

â??Neil has done well picking up guys like Victor Wanyama,â?? added Sharp.

â??He is a very good player. Gary Hooper went up and did well, too.

â??Celtic are a massive club and the European record this year is good.

â??But this is a really tough job. And, for me, Iâ??m not sure Neil is ready.

â??Mackay has also been getting a lot of mentions. He is the same sort as Moyes in respect of the fact he is a Glaswegian, a commanding defender who didnâ??t play regularly for Celtic either.

â??He went down and proved himself at Watford and Cardiff, just as Moyes did at Preston.

â??So, if the chairman speaks to David, he will not necessarily recommend him, but he will say â??good choiceâ? or â??bad choiceâ?.

â??Roberto Martinez has also been talked up but he has only won 25 games in the Premiership in four years. Thatâ??s six games a season.

â??Yes, he has won the FA Cup. But the fact is that Everton fans have been used to six or seven years of constant competition for a top-four place.

â??So the person who takes over will have to emulate that.â??
