Celtic showed continued signs of improvement as they registered their first pre-season victory with a 2-1 win over League One side Brentford.

The Scottish champions, who lost four friendly encounters during a summer tour of Germany and Austria, travelled south to London on the back of Wednesday night's three-goal win over Cliftonville in their Champions League second-qualifying round first leg.

But despite fielding a side that included only skipper Efe Ambrose from the win at the Northern Irish side's Solitude home, Neil Lennon's youthful team was too strong for Uwe Rosler's men at Griffin Park.

Amido Balde and Callum McGregor were on target for the Hoops after Adam Forshaw had given the hosts an early advantage.

Cheered on by a 6,000-strong away support, Celtic handed starts to Tom Rogic, Dylan McGeouch and Tony Watt after all three made substitute appearances in their European clash.

Australian international Rogic was first to threaten with a shot over Jack Bonham's crossbar in the first minute, but Brentford were soon ahead.

Martin Fillo beat both Ambrose and new Bhoys defender Steven Mouyokolo before clipping a cross to the back post which Forshaw nodded past Lukasz Zaluska in the visitor's goal after 10 minutes.

But Portuguese frontman Balde got his first goal in Celtic colours 13 minutes later when he collected a pass from Watt and used his strength to hold off a couple of defenders before bundling his finish past Bonham.

Balde and Watt both hit the bar in the moments before the break, but Brentford's luck ran out as the Hoops countered swiftly in the 57th minute before working the ball to 20-year-old McGregor who swept home a fine finish into the bottom corner.

AMIDO Balde scored his first goal in a Celtic shirt as the Scottish Premier League champions defeated Brentford 2-1 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Scorers: Brentford: Forshaw (10); Celtic: Balde (23), McGregor (57)

Baldeâ??s goal cancelled out an early opener from Bees defender Adam Forshaw and it was left to young midfielder Callum McGregor to score the winner on 57 minutes.

Celtic made a number of changes to the side that played on Wednesday night against Cliftonville in the Champions League second qualifying round, with new French defender Steven Mouyokolo partnering Efe Ambrose in the centre of defence.

Brentford opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Celtic were caught napping by a long ball across the six-yard box. Forshaw got to it and headed the ball beyond Lukasz Zaluska, despite Darnell Fisherâ??s best efforts to turn it back out on the goal-line.

The hostsâ?? lead was short-lived though as Balde scored on 23 minutes. Collecting a through ball from Tony Watt, Balde burst into the penalty box and, although his shot lacked meaningful power, it managed to squeeze beyond Jack Bonham.

Celtic dominated proceedings afterwards and twice rattled the Brentford crossbar. Balde tried a delicate chip over Bonham which rattled the bar and, on the follow up, Watt also struck the beam.

Celtic, however, werenâ??t to be denied a second goal and it came through McGregor. Watt was again the architect, supplying the 20-year-old with a pass and, from just outside the box, he curled
the ball beyond Bonham and into the net.

Celtic were comfortable from then on in, although Zaluska had to look lively in stoppage time to prevent Forshaw from stealing an equaliser.

CELTIC boss Neil Lennon has spoken out in support of the club’s fans in the wake of a pitch invasion at a pre-season friendly against Brentford on Saturday.

Flares were thrown onto the pitch during the game, which Celtic won 2-1. A number of fans had to be removed from the field by security, while some were seen trying to take down the goalposts

Lennon, who was escorted from the field, spoke out in support of the fans. Talking to the Daily Telegraph, he described the supporters as “over-exuberant”.

“I would like them to maybe leave the flares out. But they were in good voice today and hopefully everyone’s gone home in a good mood.”

The Metropolitan Police said that two people were arrested at the game, for entering the pitch and alleged possession of Class A drugs respectively.
