The numbers spoken of by various parties and quoted in the press are all over the shop. There's this 12% figure and there's the 15% figure which has been mentioned on numerous occasions (including by Paul Murray & co). The only logical thing to assume is that they've been counting the shares which are in Sandy & James Easdales' names as part of that 15%, eh?

With regard to Ashley, some rumours (sic!) from the Newcastle front:

 

Reported Ashley Looking To Sell Newcastle and Buy Rangers On Back Of Massive TV Deals

 

An interesting story breaking this morning as it has been claimed that Mike Ashley may actively be looking to sell Newcastle United.

 

The claims are said to have come from sources close to the Newcastle owner and the impetus has come from the megabucks BT Sport Champions League deal, which has then in turn led to analysts increasingly upping the estimates of what the next Premier League rights deal could be worth. It’s claimed that the next English Premier League deal could see the amount of money trebled, with other big hitters such as Google competing with BT Sport and driving the price up to an astonishing degree.

 

This morning’s breaking story via winnersports claims that Ashley may see the climate is right to cash in and potentially leave with a handsome return on his Newcastle investment, with prospective buyers seeing the next Premier League broadcasting deals giving massive extra value to clubs such as Newcastle United.

 

The second strand of the story credits Ashley with an interest in buying Glasgow Rangers.

 

While gaining success (top four and Champions League qualification) in England is a difficult ask even if you spend big money, Ashley is said to be eyeing snapping up Rangers and within two years he could well have Celtic as the only thing standing between him and the massive exposure Champions League football would give his sporting empire.

 

This would be a double whammy as at the same time he would/could be cashing in on the hugely increased millions the likes of BT Sport’s new Champions League broadcasting deal will bring.

 

That 2015/16 Scottish Premier League season could well see the status quo regained in football north of the border, with it being a toss of the coin once again as to who qualifies for the Champions League .

 

Of course, the potential commercial benefits for Mike Ashley’s retail empire could well see the current Newcastle owner seeing it as a very worthwhile gamble to spend the money that would put the odds massively in Rangers’ favour of qualifying ahead of Celtic. As opposed to the hand to mouth existence at Newcastle under Ashley with the Newcastle owner apparently having no commercial drive or personal appetite to even try and compete for a Champions League spot in England, with no guarantee of success due to the number of competing clubs.
