RANGERS eased to their second win of the SPFL Development League season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Dunfermline at Dumbarton.

 

In persistent driving rain, the Light Blues overcame tricky conditions to take the points through goals from Darren Ramsay, Ryan Hardie, Ryan Finnie and Kyle Hutton.

Having arrested a three-match losing run last time out as they beat Hearts, Gordon Durie’s men are now looking to keep moving up the table.

And with a bit of momentum building, they’ll hope to take their recent upturn in fortunes into October.

Rangers won all three contests between these sides last season in the league and SFA Youth Cup, which they went on to win 8-7 on penalties in the final against Hearts.

Going into this match, however, there was nothing more than goal difference separating the teams after each had won once and lost three times in the opening four fixtures.

As such, it wasn’t a great surprise to see the two cancel each other out for much of the first half hour of the game.

The Light Blues, with Richard Foster, Sebastien Faure and Marius Zaliukas all starting in defence, had the bulk of possession.

But with water teeming down and on a surface which was cutting up and therefore difficult to play a good passing game on, opportunities to score were few and far between.

Indeed, the first real opening brought an unlikely chance for Foster, someone who is still searching for his first goal in Gers colours over two spells with the club.

He linked up well going down the right with Ramsay and after receiving a return pass from the midfielder, forced a corner as he drew a save from keeper Cammy Gill.

Dunfermline’s response was relatively meek, with Alex Whittle trying his luck from long range but not troubling Lee Robinson in the home goal.

That was as close as the Pars came from netting before the break and once Rangers broke the deadlock after 33 minutes, they never looked back.

Ramsay’s opener was a good team goal, with Zaliukas setting Scott Roberts scampering down the left flank with a wonderful long defence-splitting pass along the ground.

The winger then moved inside and with Ramsay rushing into the box, he applied a good finish to the cut back, albeit with the aid of a deflection.

Scoring gave Durie’s team confidence and they quickly grew in stature, adding a second three minutes before the midway point.

This time it was Hardie who found the net as he stroked a composed shot under Gill from the edge of the area.

There was even a chance for a third before the whistle but Hutton steered a header wide from a Ramsay corner.

Instead, the lead extended after the restart as Finnie’s shot squirmed in the corner from 15 yards despite Gill getting a hand on it.

With that, the game was finished as a contest and it seemed only a matter of how many Gers would score.

But to their credit, Dunfermline tried to get themselves back into the game and an outstanding double save by Robinson was required to stop them netting.

Moments later the keeper was called into action again as he thrust himself full length across his goal to tip a Lewis Martin header away.

The visitors’ resurgence was brief and Gers rounded off the night with another goal from the penalty spot nine minutes from the end.

Hutton was fouled by Finn Graham and stepped up to take the kick himself, sending the keeper the wrong way with a confident strike.

ALLY MCCOIST is hopeful Ryan Hardie can become a permanent fixture at first-team level in the future but he will give the youngster time to continue to develop his undoubted talent.

 

The 17-year-old striker from Stranraer recently made his senior debut for Rangers when he replaced Dean Shiels in the 3-1 League Cup victory over Falkirk on September 23.

 

On that occasion he only had six minutes to impress but last night he again caught McCoist’s eye when he bagged a goal as Gordon Durie’s Development side comfortably won 4-0 against Dunfermline at Dumbarton’s Bet Butler Stadium.

 

The manager believes Hardie has bags of potential and that his ability and desire to get goals is the stand-out feature of his game.

 

He said: “He’s a box of tricks, he’s very, very pacey and he’s a free spirit at the moment. He needs to be refined and there needs to be an overall sharpness to his game but he’s a young kid.

 

“What he can do at this moment of time in his game is put the ball in the back of the net and it just shows you how much we think of him that we’ve already given him first team action in a tough cup tie at Falkirk.

 

“I would be very hopeful without wanting to put any pressure on him, which we are anxious not to do, that we’ll see a lot more of Ryan in the very near future.”

 

On Hardie, team-mate Darren Ramsay added: "He's improved a lot since the start of the season. He's putting himself about more and getting chances to score so hopefully he can keep going and he can get another chance.

 

"It's always positive when one of our own goes up and plays for the first team so hopefully a few more can get a chance soon."

 

Ramsay, Ryan Finnie and Kyle Hutton were also on target in the Development squad’s league match and McCoist was pleased to see several players shine in difficult conditions against the Pars.

 

Speaking at Murray Park to RangersTV, he said: “The Development team put in a great performance on Tuesday night, I really enjoyed the game.

 

“Everybody did well but I was really pleased with the first teamers who played. Lee Robinson made a couple of fantastic saves, Foster did well and Zaliukas and Faure did really well.

 

“I was very, very encouraged by their performance, ably assisted by some of the younger lads. Ryan Hardie was involved again and managed to score.

 

“The fringe players who are in the reserves have certainly come back into the reckoning; they gave us what we were looking for particularly in their reaction to the first-team result.”
