I have no idea what the SPFL will do with the money, but if it distributes some or all of it to the rest of its members, or just pays its bills, that won't be objectionable.

The play-offs are generally thought to be a good idea, but they should not provide a huge financial advantage to lower placed clubs over the champion club.

If we had won the division, we wouldn't have cared, but we didn't and now we're squealing about unfairness.

Maybe we should just appreciate this lifeline after the worst onfield failure in our long and distinguished history.

How will the money be distributed is the key question.

I recall that Rangers prize money that was held back when we went tits up was distributed on an SPL points basis. Tims got the bulk of it, rest of the SPL got what was left.

SPFL must make it clear where this money will go

SPFL could confront Rangers over plans for play-off tickets

By Alasdair Lamont BBC Scotland

Rangers and the Scottish Professional Football League could clash over plans to let season ticket holders into play-off matches at Ibrox for nothing.

The SPFL prohibits clubs from allowing fans free entry to end-of-season games.

With 50% of gate money from each play-off game due to the SPFL, up to three home ties at Ibrox would generate hundreds of thousands of pounds to be shared out among all member clubs.

But allowing around 25,000 fans in for free would greatly diminish that sum.

The SPFL has offered no comment on the matter so far.

The 50% of the cash generated through gate receipts that goes to the SPFL is to be re-distributed to every club not involved in the games.

Rangers currently sit third in the Scottish Championship with one match of the normal league season remaining, which is against Hearts.

Hibernian are in second place at the moment, a position which decreases the potential amount of Premiership play-off matches from six to four.

Hibs allowed season ticket holders in for free last season when they lost out to Hamilton Academical in the play-off final.

They sought permission to do so from the SPFL board and were informed the rule breach would not be penalised on that occasion.

Rangers fans welcome Ibrox play-off plan

RANGERS fans today welcomed plans to flaunt SPFL rules and let Ibrox season ticket holders into the Premiership Play-Off matches for free.

Senior officials at the Championship club are considering not charging around 25,000 supporters to attend the games next month.

The SPFL, which banks half of the gate receipts due to a controversial levy, prohibits clubs from letting fans in for nothing.

However, Hibs allowed their season ticket holders into the second leg of the play-off final against Hamilton at Easter Road last year for free.

The Edinburgh club were not punished by the governing body on that occasion - and their Glasgow rivals believe that case set a precedent.

Allowing Rangers season ticket holders into Ibrox for free will ensure large attendances for matches which will be screened live on television.

Drew Roberton, general secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association, welcomed the proposed move by the promotion hopefuls.

He said: "I think it's a tremendous gesture by the club. It's no secret the club needs investment at the moment. I am sure that any revenue they get from the play-offs will be welcome.

"So I think this is a tremendous gesture to allow season ticket holders in for free. It shows an appreciation of the backing the fans have given the team this year.

"There's a common sense approach to the paying public at work here as well. There could be up to six games to go to. Fans might have to shell out in the region of between £120 and £140.

"If Rangers play Hibs then the chances are they will charge £28 to get into Easter Road again. That is what they have charged us for the two games there this season. That is what they charged when both clubs were in the top flight.

"I would like to think that if that (letting season ticket holders in for free) is what Hibs did last season there is no reason why Rangers couldn't do the same."

The SPFL, who declined to comment on speculation Rangers would let season ticket holders into games for free, bank 50 per cent of takings from play-off matches before expenses.

The SPFL clubs voted to retain the levy at Hampden last Thursday after a bid by Hibs, who were supported by both Hearts and Motherwell, to have it scrapped.

If Rangers were to take part in three play-off games at Ibrox - in the quarter-final, semi-final and final - they could have to pay the governing body over £1 million.

The money from the Premiership, Championship and League One play-off matches will be distributed evenly among member clubs.

Roberton added: "I am sure the fact that the SPFL were going to pocket 50 per cent of the gate money from the play-off games stuck in the throats of an awful lot of Rangers fans.

"It was a scandal the football authorities are looking for 50 per cent of the money before expenses. That is quite a financial tax.

"I think there is a general feeling that they didn't want Rangers - but they were quite happy to take the Rangers fans' money."

Motherwell plan to offer season-ticket holders free entry if they end up in play-offs despite SPFL gate fees rule

Motherwell will offer free entry to their regular fans if they end up in play-off

But SPFL are entitled to 50 per cent of gate proceeds from the games

Motherwell will make stand and offer free tickets in event of finishing 11th

Rangers and Hibernian will back the club's stance against the SPFL

Motherwell have vowed to go to battle with the SPFL over the issue of free entry to the Premiership play-offs for season-ticket holders.

And the Fir Park side are set to win powerful backing for their revolt from Championship promotion challengers Rangers and Hibernian.

Under existing rules, the SPFL are entitled to take 50 per cent of the gate proceeds from the six play-off ties for redistribution among the clubs. But a bid by the league board to force play-off finalists to charge all fans a minimum price of £15 for the play-off ties was withdrawn at a meeting last Thursday.

Expressing unease among the play-off finalists that the SPFL might be using the ties to milk supporters, Motherwell general manager Alan Burrows told Sportsmail his club will make a stand if they finish in the Premiership play-off place.

'All our focus at Motherwell in the next four games is fully on avoiding the play-offs altogether,' said Burrows.

'We fully accept and appreciate that there are rules on this in place.

'But, in the eventuality that we are in 11th place come the play-offs, then it is not our intention to charge our season-ticket holders for the play-off final at Fir Park.

'We believe we have sold them tickets which entitle them to the full story of the season.'

Rangers sources said last night that the club have yet to reach a final decision on whether to seek an SPFL exemption which would allow them to let their 25,000 season ticket holders into play-off games for free.

Hibs gained a one-off dispensation to give their most loyal fans free admission to last season's home play-off clash with Hamilton.

Sportsmail understands, however, that SPFL lawyers have already warned clubs that attempts to do the same this season will be strongly resisted as it would constitute a breach of league rules.

Last week, a resolution by Hibs and Motherwell to have the 50-per-cent levy on play-off gates cut in half was defeated.

Accused of a cash grab to keep more of the play-off cash, Hibs argue their main concern is that fans are being fleeced to atone for the absence of a league sponsor for the last two seasons.

Asked if he expects a fight on the matter from league chiefs, Burrows admitted: 'Based on what has gone previously, then yes.'

The majority of clubs voted to fleece the play-off clubs so that's the rules, and so that needs to be followed, even if it is ludicrous. But technically, the clubs should charge as little as they like - it's not as if they will be profiteering in any way and it could lead to a loss after the 50% gross cut - it's actually altruistic towards their fans.

I can't see the moral justification for forcing other clubs fans to pay a big entry fee just because you've bullied you're way into claiming half of it for doing nowt. I would say this applies to all play off clubs - not just Rangers, who will hopefully never be involved in them again. It's the yo-yo clubs that will suffer time and again, but most of them will likely have voted for it, just for the one off, Hibs and Rangers pay day. Blind, short-termism money grabbing as usual.

Just thinking that there may be another vote on this next season which I can see overturning this and halving the play-off "tax". Who cares so much about how much it is when it's already buttons once it's shared out...?
