Richard Gough: I was proved right...

... in backing Dave King's Rangers takeover.

GOUGH says the infighting which was tearing the heart out of his beloved club has come to an end under King who has installed a management team to take the club forward.

RICHARD GOUGH insists his gamble to back Dave King ’s take-over is paying off now peace has returned to Rangers .

The Light Blues legend revealed he was swithering whether to endorse the businessman’s plea to put his face to a season ticket drive at Ibrox last season but all doubts have now been removed.

After warning fans not to expect a quickfire return to full health, Gough admits the political infighting is now a thing of the past.

He said: “There’s an optimism you can feel when you come through the door. That is not just from the people in charge but the structure behind them.

“There was a lot of in-fighting. Even when I backed Dave King, when he phoned me up and said: ‘We’ve got these season tickets ...’ I was to-ing and fro-ing. But I gave him my backing to do that and it turned out to be the right thing to do eventually. But there were still a lot of factions.

“Now though, everyone has come together and they can see he put a structure in place. He’s put a very intelligent man Stewart Robertson in as managing director. Dave is a shrewd man. He doesn’t make many mistakes. On that financial side anyway.

“Progress is maybe going to be slow, a bit by bit approach. But the management team now look like a good fit.

“It’s still early days and it’s not going to be a quick fix. The club had the heart ripped out of it for three years.”

Gough has been stunned by the unfailing loyalty of an Ibrox support he insists have done more than anyone to ensure senior football is still being played in Govan.

He said: “We’ve been on the right track from March. And getting the trust of supporters with 32,000 season tickets, that’s incredible after what has happened here. The supporters have given that trust again.

“There is talk of 40,000 for St Mirren on Friday, to watch a Championship game. This club is like a family. It’s not a football club, it’s an institution. An institution that was close to getting damaged beyond repair. But now we’ve put that in the past. We move on and hope to get the club back its standing in Scottish football.”

Assuming that's meant to be 'on the financial side anyway' that's quite clever. Cue hordes of comments from celtc fans on the lines of 'And what about the SA tax case? Youse are so bigotted. I hate the Daily Ranger' and so on. Click!

Taken from the Simon Cowell book of self-righteousness.
