U20s v Aberdoom

Recommended Posts

RANGERS under-20s returned to winning ways this afternoon with a quite excellent 5-2 win over Aberdeen at Brechin City’s Glebe Park this afternoon.

Doubles from Fraser Aird and Ross Lyon as well as a Liam Burt stunner sealed a thoroughly merited victory over the reigning Development League Champions and went some way to making up for successive 4-0 defeats.

And, determined to right the wrongs of the last two weeks, Rangers began the match at a frantic pace and carved out numerous opportunities for an opening goal.

A slip in midfield from Aberdeen allowed Scott Roberts the chance to pick-up, and he immediately lifted his head and picked out the onrushing Ross Lyon from the left flank, and he chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper only to see it hooked clear by Craig Storie at the last possible minute.

Kyle Bradley, who impressed when he came on as a half time sub last week, was unlucky to see a snapshot slip wide as he latched onto a Liam Burt ball onto his right foot on the edge of the area.

It was all Rangers, but against the run of play, the Dons managed to grab the lead.

Barry Robson, himself a former Rangers youth player but now 37 and approaching the end of a stellar career, showed his true quality with a top drawer delivery from a corner into the area that was met by the head of Joe Nuttall to power the ball into the back of the net.

From a Light Blue perspective, it was a horrible goal to lose but they deserve great credit for an excellent response to that early blow.

Scott Roberts, who was so impressive throughout the game, collected the ball and sprinted down the left touchline before squaring into Ross Lyon in the penalty area, and while he had his back to goal, he pirouetted supremely to fire the ball below Scott Brown in the home goal.

It was a great move from Rangers, and within two minutes, they got their noses in front thanks to some loose play at the back from Aberdeen.

Roberts again was lively to collect the loose ball and he squared for Fraser Aird to poke into an empty net to make it 2-1, but seconds after the restart, it was 2-2.

Straight from kick-off almost, Robson chipped a ball over the Rangers defence for Nuttall to round Liam Kelly and square the game once more, making it four goals scored in an incredible seven minute period.

From a defensive perspective, the game thankfully calmed down a shade, but another mistake at the back, this time from the experienced Robson, handed Rangers the chance to make it 3-2.

On what was a poor surface at Glebe Park, Robson lost his footing and gifted the ball to Liam Burt 25 yards from goal, and sensationally, he chipped goalkeeper Brown to put Rangers into the lead once again.

Into the second half, and while goalmouth action wasn’t occurring nearly as often as it was in the first half, there were still a number of chances being made at both ends.

Jamie Barjonas was having a great game in the middle of the park for the Gers, and after striding forward, he slipped in Liam Burt whose effort was tipped away by Brown, and from the resulting corner, the goalkeeper again came to the rescue for the Dons to save from the head of Ross McCrorie.

At the other end, Rangers had Liam Kelly to thank for two saves from the top drawer. Firstly, he denied Craig Storie with a superb one-handed effort with the Dons’ man’s shot from 25 yards coming through traffic, and then from point-blank range, he somehow turned a Cammy Smith shot from three yards onto the post.

Aberdeen were definitely on top in the match, but Rangers always looked a threat on the counter and they managed to pull two goals clear thanks to Fraser Aird’s second of the afternoon.

Played down the wing by Ross Lyon, Aird collected his pass, ghosted past full-back Daniel Harvey and slammed the ball into the opposite corner to give Ian Durrant’s boys some daylight.

Game, set and match? Not quite as Aberdeen were awarded a penalty kick with 13 minutes left on the clock. Nuttall, looking for his hat-trick, stepped up ans saw his shot beaten away by Kelly who quickly got down to his right to block.

It looked as if that would be that for a tremendous afternoon of football, but Rangers managed to grab a fifth with just two minutes left on the clock.

Substitute Zak Rudden raced through on goal, saw his shot saved by Brown, but the rebound went only as far as Ross Lyon to grab his second of a terrific day for Ian Durrant’s side as they sent out a real message to the rest of the league.
