Rangers completes 4-year journey back to Scottish top flight

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Rangers completed its sobering, four-year journey back to the top level of Scottish football following financial problems by clinching promotion from the second tier on Tuesday with five games to spare.

Rangers beat Dumbarton 1-0 at Ibrox to guarantee winning the Scottish Championship. The Glasgow club, which has won Scotland's top-flight title 54 times, was relegated to the country's fourth and lowest tier in 2012 as punishment for building up large tax debts that led to the club's collapse. Rangers achieved two straight promotions, before needing two seasons to get out of the Championship.

"We're delighted the club are back," Rangers manager Mark Warburton said. "But we have to keep building and moving forward. The worst thing we can do now is take our foot off the gas." It's been a dark period for a club that not only has a world-record number of domestic league titles, but also has won 33 Scottish Cups, 27 League Cups and the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972.

From regular appearances against Europe's top teams in the Champions League or the second-tier UEFA Cup/Europa League, Rangers had to get used to playing at outposts of Scottish football — often in front of crowds of only hundreds. The squad was also shredded of its top players, with then-coach Ally McCoist — a former Rangers striker — running a club in financial and sporting turmoil.

However, the natural order has been restored, meaning there should be more global interest in Scotland again. The so-called "Old Firm" derbies between Glasgow rivals Rangers and Celtic are among the most passionate and intense games in world football.

Other leading Scottish clubs will be delighted at Rangers' return to the Scottish Premiership because of financial reasons, such as the likely improved TV and sponsorship deals and increased gate receipts.
