THE Rangers captain insists Celtic wouldn't have hired Brendan Rodgers as manager if it wasn't for the improvement in his side.

LEE WALLACE is targeting the title after claiming Celtic have been playing catch-up on Rangers since Mark Warburton became boss.

The Light Blues skipper has welcomed the arrival of Brendan Rodgers, but reckons his arch-rivals only moved for the former Liverpool gaffer because of the strides being taken at Ibrox.

Rangers arrived in South Carolina for a 10-day training camp last night, but Wallace is in no mood to extend southern hospitality to Celtic.

He warned Warburton’s men are coming for their crown and insists Rangers have never been more determined to win back their place at the summit of Scottish football.

Wallace said: “It’s absolutely a season to look forward to. The fact they (Celtic) have brought in a manager of that calibre is due, out of respect, to what we’ve done.

“They’ve had a look at the Scottish Cup semi-final result. But also, it’s not just down to that one game. It’s what we did throughout the season and how we’ve been moving forward as a club and the steps we’re making.

“It’s going to be an exciting league and we’re glad to be going back to decent venues in front of good away supports at the top level of Scottish football.

“Now we’re back, we’ll make sure we’re highly competitive and that comes from being the best we can in every single day’s training at Murray Park.

“It’s great we’ve got ourselves back in the top flight, where we should be playing our football. I’m glad we can stop talking about where we should be — now we can go and be competitive.

“We’re certainly not just going back into the top flight to bed ourselves in. That’s wrong, it would go against how we operate as a group and how we are as a football club.

“It’s case of getting back to what Rangers should be winning, targeting what Rangers have done in the past.

“Historically, Rangers have been a dominant force in Scottish football. It’s about ensuring we give all we can so we can get back to winning top Rangers silverware.”
