Rangers defender Danny Wilson has a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for around 10 weeks, manager Pedro Caixinha confirmed to the Glasgow Evening Times.

The news means that the centre-half will miss the start of the Light Blues’ Europa League campaign, which will commence next month.

Caixinha added that Wilson ‘will maybe be back by August’ but his absence will be a blow to their European ambitions, with the first qualifier slated for June 29.

The 25-year-old suffered the knock in the win over Partick Thistle earlier this month, but after sitting out matches against Hearts and Aberdeen he returned to the bench for the final day victory at St. Johnstone.

However, a scan earlier this week revealed damage to the knee, the latest in a string of fitness issues for Wilson, who made only 22 Scottish Premiership appearances this season.

Calf and thigh problems interrupted the first half of his campaign as the Gers ultimately managed only a third-placed finish, nine points adrift of Aberdeen in second and a full 39 behind runaway champions Celtic.

Rangers will be looking to close the gap to their Old Firm rivals next term but their cause will not be aided by a long and gruelling term, with the team set to return to pre-season training in less than two weeks time.
