19s Secure Ibrox Win

RANGERS have put pressure on rivals Celtic by beating Dundee United 2-0 at Ibrox this afternoon to move two points clear at the top of the under-19 SPL league.

Steven Lennon was the hero with a second-half double and this was enough to seal an important win with Celtic travelling to Edinburgh tomorrow for their game in-hand against Hearts.

It was an impressive performance from Billy Kirkwood's side against the Terrors but it came at a cost as John Fleck was given a straight red card on 74 minutes for a poor challenge on United defender Mick O'Byrne.

The 15-year-old will now miss the club's SFA Youth Cup semi-final against Ross County in Dingwall on Tuesday night.

Rangers totally dominated the opening 45 minutes and how the scoreline stayed goalless at the half-time interval was a miracle with Andrew Shinnie, Steven Lennon and John Fleck all posing a threat to the opposition's goal.

With so much to play for it was not surprising that the home side came out in the second period with more intent and defender Chris Smith, who was excellent on the day, came close to opening the scoring when he smashed the ball off the bar with a powerful header from a Lennon corner on 48 minutes.

At this stage United had not tested Scott Gallacher throughout the game but the Gers' keeper had to be at his best when he produced a stunning save to deny Phil McGrath and this proved to be a turning point in the game.

Smith was again to come close with yet another header which went inches wide but it was the under-19s prolific hitman Lennon that was to finally bag the opening goal on 67 minutes.

Fleck drove into the box from the right and crossed the ball into the danger area. It fell to the Gers' striker who drilled a low shot beyond the helpless John Gibson into the United goal.

The home side certainly deserved their lead at this stage and eleven minutes later they had doubled their advantage.

A mix-up between United stopper McGrath and keeper Gibson allowed the ball to drop to Lennon who took full advantage to prod the ball home from 12 yards.

Fleck's sending off was the only disappointment from a match which Rangers won convincingly and both sides were to finish with 10-men as O'Byrne was shown a second yellow card for a cynical tackle on Lennon 20 yards from goal.

RANGERS: Gallacher, Lowing, Perry, Smith, Kinniburgh, Shinnie, McLachlan (Ness), McMillan (Djeziri), Furman, Fleck, Lennon (Campbell)

Subs Not Used: Sagar, Little, Donald

DUNDEE UNITED: Gibson, McMeehan, Pope, McGrath, O'Burne, Mathieson, Milligan, McCord (Allan), Feeney (McLeod), Jeffrey (Dow), Paterson

Subs Not Used: Cannon, Colgan, Smith

Fleck looked very good but his challenge was shocking, Furman and Lennon were very impressive . The whole defense had a comftable game with Utd only having one chance. Djeziri looked no bad when he came on and was show boating a bit . Not a bad game and the team looks very good

Anyone else go

Why are we not seeing some of these players getting a chance to come on as a sub for the first team?DJ was 15 when he hit the first team Clarence Seedorf, Wayne Rooney, all young and got a chance. Our young stars might not be as far as these guy's but being part of the squad and getting a seat on the bench will help bring them on.
