Trio Win Call-up

THE RANGERS trio of Allan McGregor, Kris Boyd and Alan Hutton have been named in Alex McLeish's Scotland squad for next Wednesday's friendly against South Africa.

McLeish has deliberately left Davie Weir and Lee McCulloch out due to the amount of football Rangers are involved in this month and he has also not selected Barry Ferguson as he is suspended for the next Euro 2008 quialifier against Lithuania on September 8.

Hutton earned his first cap in a frendly against Austria last season and must be in with a chance of facing the South Africans at Pittodrie. McGregor and Boyd are also likely to feature at some stage.

Tickets for the game - on August 22 - are on sale now.

Meanwhile Roy Carroll has been selected by Northern Ireland for their Euro qualifier against Lichtenstein on the same night. The US national association has yet to announce if DaMarcus Beasley will be picked for a friendly in Sweden.

The Scotland squad is:

Goalkeepers

Neil Alexander (Ipswich Town)

Craig Gordon (Sunderland)

David Marshall (Norwich City) Alan Hutton, Scotland

Allan McGregor (Rangers)

Defenders

Graham Alexander (Preston North End)

Russell Anderson (Sunderland)

Gary Caldwell (Celtic)

Alan Hutton (Rangers)

Jay McEveley (Derby County)

Stephen McManus (Celtic)

Steven Pressley (Celtic)

Midfield

Scott Brown (Celtic)

Darren Fletcher (Manchester United)

Stephen Pearson (Derby County)

Barry Robson (Dundee United)

Gary Teale (Derby County)

Forwards

Craig Beattie (West Bromwich Albion)

Kris Boyd (Rangers)

James McFadden (Everton)

Shaun Maloney (Aston Villa)

Kenny Miller (Celtic)

Garry O'Connor (Birmingham City)

Its not a bad squad for a friendly, id only say the midfield looks a bit light without Ferguson, hartley, Quashie and McCulloch but there is reasons for leaving them out for this one. But the forward line looks strong.

Hutton HAS to play, but no Gary Naismith!!

And its good that the likes of S Smith, Webster, Weir, Ferguson, Thomson McCulloch, Whittaker Adam can all still force there way in. I actually think this would have been a good chance for Thomson to get a call up.

From that squad id play:

_______________Gordon______________

Hutton___Anderson___McManus___Alexander???

Fletcher___Brown____Robson___McFadden

__________O Connor___Maloney________

Agree the midfield looks weak. Also has Eck even selected a LB? Just shows up how weak we are upfront as they are our first choice strikers. THe only one's I would ever play are Boyd, O'Connor and McFadden. The rest simply aren't good enough.

I would play:

McGregor

Hutton Anderson McManus Alexander??

Teale Brown Fletcher Robson

McFadden O'Connor/Boyd

Playing McGregor as we know Gordon is No.1 but it looks like Allan will be his understudy so needs some games at international level. (Plus i'm biased  )

McGregor out :(

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has withdrawn from the Scotland squad due to face South Africa on Wednesday.

McGregor is carrying a minor ankle injury and it has been decided he will not be risked in the friendly meeting at Pittodrie.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury in Rangers' 7-2 victory over Falkirk on Saturday and the shot-stopper will now fly back to Glasgow.

Scotland manager Alex McLeish, who already has goalkeeping cover in Craig Gordon, Neil Alexander and David Marshall, will not call-up a replacement.

McGregor currently has one international cap to his name, but he is a regular in the Rangers first-team.

Virgin media decided it would go tit up 14 mins into the game so didn't get to see bugger all of it. Was wondering if any guys who watched it could give a detialed report of how the two Rangers boys got on. Obviously Boydie won the game but looking for a bit more than that. Hope Alan did himself justice, because on club form he's on of the few players who should be guaranteed his position in the qualifiers.

From the little I saw on the highlights he seemed to do well enough in defence. The attacker managed to get a couple of yards away from him once to put a poor cross in but that seemed about it. Looked comfortable on the ball, got fouled a couple of times, nothing serious. Covered the CB's on at least one occassion. Perhaps not as good going forward as recently?
