WALTER SMITH has hinted that he may look to deposed captain Barry Ferguson as Rangers go for Championship glory at Tannadice on Sunday.

Ferguson was fined and banned for two weeks - along with Allan McGregor - and stripped of the captaincy for indisiplne while with Scotland at the end of March.

He was then allowed back to top team training but was injured in a reserve game and it was felt he would not be seen again this season.

However, he came on as substitute against Aberdeen last Saturday and played for an hour in a closed door game against Manchester City on Tuesday.

Given his vast experience there is a distinct possibility he could be used in the game that can take Rangers to the title.

Barry Ferguson and Morgaro GomisFerguson and Nacho Novo are the only survivors from the last title win in 2005 and that could weigh on the manager's mind when he picks his team.

"You will have to wait and see," said Smith at today's press conferenece. "He is fit enough to start the game. He was fit enough to start last week too. We gave him a few extra days after the Hibs game when he might have played.

"Any player who has experienced winning Championships - and we don't have that many of them - would help."

Madjid Bougherra would certainly welcome Ferguson back into the side. He said: "He is a key player. I was pleased to see him come on against Aberdeen last week. He pushed the team."
