Alexander drops Gers hint

Recommended Posts

There's completely conflicting reports on this subject in the press today, so imo it's just more of the usual twisted shit-stirring than anything else. Other reports are saying that Alexander wants to stay and challenge for the No.1 spot. No doubt the jhournos think they're turning the screws ahead of tomorrow nights game in the hope that it helps unsettle the squad & we drop points. They're not discrete about it.

With McGregor's future unclear I doubt Alexander will be interested in going anywhere for the time being...

He's also got League & Cup winners medals as well as playing in a UEFA Cup final & getting a UEFA Cup runners up medal from it since coming to Rangers. You have to wonder if he'd even be interested in moving to a Championship club with little chance of winning anything at all.

His view appears pretty clear.

Neil Alexander has revealed he will consider quitting Rangers if he continues to play second fiddle to Allan McGregor in goal.

Alexander, 31, made his first Scottish Premier League appearance of the season in Saturday's 3-0 win over St Johnstone after McGregor suffered a hamstring injury. He will also start tomorrow's trip to Dundee United but is resigned to losing his place once his rival is fit – as he has done during his entire two-year Rangers career.

"It's extremely hard, especially at my age, because I want to play," said Alexander, who joined the club in 2008 after seven seasons with Cardiff City and Ipswich Town. "And, having had a taste of playing at this club and the success I've had in a short period of time, it makes it twice as hard to be sitting on the sidelines and not involved when the boys are winning.

"If that was the case then I'd have to go away and think about it. I would need to look at my options and decide what to do.

"I love being at the club. I feel it's been the best time of my career, and my wife and kids are settled, so you have to weigh everything up involved with being here. We have to wait to see what the future brings, but there's only so long, I feel, before I need to get back playing. If it's not here, then maybe I need to look somewhere else.

"Do I have a timeframe in my own head? Yes. I spoke to the gaffer after the first game of the season as I felt I needed to go in and have a chat with him. He said I had never let him down and that I've done brilliantly since I joined the club. He put his arm round me and said I was unlucky not to be in the team.

"But it's my career at the end of the day and, as much as I love it here and would love to stay for a long time, I feel I need to be playing. I've got an idea in my own head and we'll see what happens."

Yes it's clear and I don't blame the lad for wanting first team football.

He's shown himself capable of playing at the highest levels so why shouldn't he want to play more often. I'd imagine he'll give it another 6 months here to see if AM leaves. If that does happen, Alexander will become our number 1 so he'll be more than happy to stay.

Playing devil's advocate: Is there an argument for Walter rotating the keeping position to keep Alexander happy?

If Smith was to guarantee him, say 15 SPL games per season plus a selection of Cup games, would he take it? Shagger can be consoled with the fact he is still number one and, form allowing, will get the nod for the OF and european ties. Rangers benefit because they keep two top quality goalkeepers match fit.
