McCulloch wants quick takeover

Recommended Posts

I think players should stay out of the takeover speculation. They are not really qualified or best placed to give a public opinion.

In what sense would they not be best placed ? If you read McCulloch's quotes he says, simply, that a) they want it resolved sooner rather than later (who doesn't ??) b) it means WS knows if he will have cash to spend in Jan or not (makes sense for the manager to have some knowledge of what he has to work with, even if that is selling so he can buy) and c) the team needs reinforcements (we are ALL saying that).

Curious, did you read the article in the link ? Because McCulloch's statement/quotes did not in anyway make mention of the technicalities of the takeover but was all about the playing side should that takeover happen - and I think he would certainly be qualified and in a good position to make statement in that regard.

I think players should stay out of the takeover speculation. They are not really qualified or best placed to give a public opinion.

McCulloch was being interviewed because he was at Greaves Sports in Glasgow yesterday to help launch the new Puma King Finale boot. The quotes re the takeover are in a Daily Record article by David McCarthy and the article isn't even about the takeover. Sky Sports basically cherry-picked the part where the takeover is mentioned and created their own misleading mini-article using a few of the Record's Jig quotes. Here are the quotes below in the context of the original article:

Rangers ace Lee McCulloch admits big freeze has been 'blessing' to injury-hit Ibrox side

Dec 3 2010 By David McCarthy

LEE McCULLOCH last night admitted the big freeze has come at a perfect time for a threadbare Rangers squad that was feeling the heat of battling on domestic and European fronts.

Walter Smith's men will now have another weekend off after last Sunday's SPL clash at Tannadice was postponed because of the severe weather.

And McCulloch believes the timing of the lay-off could not have been better for his side, which has seen injuries mount up alarmingly over the past few weeks.

The midfielder was at Greaves Sports in Glasgow yesterday to help launch the new Puma King Finale boot - and while he loves the new footwear, he is delighted he's not having to wear them against Hearts tomorrow.

The 32-year-old said: "The weather has been a bit of a blessing in disguise for us because we've still got a number of the lads out injured.

"Maurice Edu, Madjid Bougherra and Andy Webster are all still struggling so it buys them a little more time in terms of getting themselves back fit.

"James Beattie is another one who is battling to get back to full fitness.

"You usually don't want to see any game called off but it has came at a good time for us as we've been down to the bare bones in recent weeks.

"We've had three games a week since the start of the season and it takes its toll.

"The Bursaspor match is coming up next week too so it will be beneficial to have everyone rested and ready to go."

McCulloch knows that Rangers played almost 70 matches in their incredible run to the UEFA Cup Final two years ago and would gladly take a repeat of that hectic schedule if it meant getting to Dublin for the Europa League Final this time round.

However, he admits Rangers will have to add to their squad in January if they are to have any chance of making progress in Europe - whether or not the club finds new buyers.

The former Motherwell and Wigan star added: "I don't know what is happening as regards the takeover.

"But it would be better for everyone if we could get the matter resolved sooner rather than later.

"That way the gaffer will know if he has any money to spend in January.

"I still think we need a couple of fresh faces if we want to do well in Europe and in the league.

"In that regard the gaffer has to be given some money to spend and it would be great to see at least one or two players in.

"In 2008 we played 68 games which was a lot of football.

"We have a thin squad as it is now and although we have had a couple of fixtures postponed, it is still too early to talk about fixture pile ups.

Progress

"It all depends on how well we do in the Europa League and no one here wants to tempt fate.

"It would be great to go on another run like 2008 but we know it will be tough as we would have a lot of back-to-back games if we continue to progress."

Before Rangers start thinking about the Europa League, they have a final Champions League fixture to fulfil and although the clash with Bursaspor in Turkey is meaningless in terms of final placings in Group C - McCulloch still views it as an important match.

He said: "Although we know we're guaranteed third place, the more points you get the more money the club gets.

"And I'm told eight points would be a record for Ranger sin the Champions League so there's still plenty to play for.

"I think Bursaspor will be determined to make a point too.

"They are the Turkish champions and I don't think they are as bad a team as their results have suggested."

Meanwhi le, Rangers have confirmed that Kirk Broadfoot is likely to be out of action until the New Year. The defender has been struggling with a foot problem and had tried to play through the pain barrier as injuries mount for the Scottish champions.

We all talk about player's fitness and abilities but that does not mean that one of Whyte's accountants should be publicly giving the team advice on training or playing... ;)

Perhaps but take a look at what McCulloch says - he really doesnt get into the takeover talk at all. Everything he says is from a playing perspective. I dont see what is wrong with him saying "hopefully it is done sooner rather than later". I also dont think he is giving much of a public opinion about technical aspects of it - he has stayed away from that.

Agree with Craig & would add that he's also clearly just answering a series of questions as best as he can. He's not standing in a Glasgow sports shop shouting for everyone to gather round coz he's got something to say about the takeover of Rangers.
