ian1964 10,457 Posted May 2, 2011 Share Posted May 2, 2011 ALEX Salmond last night vowed to go to war on bigots - and finally rid Scotland of the scourge of sectarianism. The SNP leader promised to change the law to "eradicate" religious hatred if returned as First Minister this week. He made the pledge during the penultimate leaders' debate before Scots voters go to the polls on Thursday. And, speaking in front of a 1,000-strong audience in Perth, he warned sectarian chanting at football matches "will not be tolerated". He said: "Sectarian chanting in any public forum, a football match or not, is against the law. "Secondly, legislation will be brought forward to crack down on internet hate which is the cauldron of much of this resentment. "The idea that Scotland is a sectarian society is wrong. "Last year we welcomed His Holiness the Pope and we celebrated the 450th anniversary of the Reformation together." He added: "We've a problem we've got to eradicate and we're going to do it." His comments follow a huge police probe into mail bombs sent to Celtic boss Neil Lennon and other Hoops targets. Labour leader Iain Gray agreed the country must "face up" to bigotry He added: "On the issue of internet hate, those kind of comments are regularly placed on blogs and no action is taken. "It is absolutely right that we should prosecute. There is no place for this in modern Scotland." Last night's debate also saw Mr Salmond, Mr Gray, Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie and Lib Dem chief Tavish Scott clash over issues including free university education to bus passes and plans for an independence referendum.
