Auxerre in for Edu ???

Recommended Posts

Ligue 1 side Auxerre have taken the lead in a three-team race for Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

The US international has long received interest from Turkish outfit Bursaspor and an English Premier League club has also been calling of late, but it is French side Auxerre that have advanced talks for his services.

Though Edu's agent, Lyle Yorks, did not wish to comment extensively on the situation, he did confirm to MLSsoccer.com that Auxerre were very interested in his client.

The Blanc et Blue opened their season with a loss at Montpellier last weekend. Meanwhile, Edu and Rangers have already begun both their league and European campaigns, garnering four points from their first two Scottish Premier League matches and suffering UEFA Champions League elimination against Swedish side Malm¶ FF, which sent them into the Europa League playoff round.

The 25-year-old has now started 30 consecutive matches across all competitions for the Glasgow club. That streak may be in jeopardy when Rangers travel to Inverness on Saturday, after Edu was forced to beg out of a midweek US national team call-up with a calf strain.

I actually think there is a really good player in there somewhere. I fear a Charlie Adam situation with him that he will become a top player after he leaves Rangers.

He can only improve because he can't get that much worse, but he'll never be as good as Charlie Adam. Even while Charlie was with us he showed huge potential and wasn't shy about sticking the ball in the net. When you have a midfielder who scores 14 goals in a season like Charlie did for us in 06/07 and scores quite a few goals in Europe as well you're not going to be particularly surprised when he moves on and does well for another club.

With Mo Edu I'd say we should be looking for a couple of million considering that we paid £2.6m and he still has 2 years to run on his contract. If Auxerre or anyone else are willing to give us £2m or close to that amount we should sell immediately and spend the money on actually improving the quality of the team.
