The player holds an Italian passport and would not require a work permit to sign for Rangers. The 26-year-old returned to action in January, following a seven-month lay-off due to a knee cruciate ligament injury. Abelairas spent seven years with River Plate, winning the Clausura twice, before leaving the club. He was expected to join Deportes Iquique in August this year, having left Los Millonarios in June. Villarreal purchased 50% of Abelairas' rights in 2008, one of six River Plate players acquired by the Spanish club. He was also linked with a loan move to MLS side Seattle Sounders in 2010, having seen him during a pre-season tour to Argentina. There is very strange business going on with the Spanish and the Portuguese when it comes to South American footballers. If we assume that he's currently a free agent (is he?) then Villareal would get 50% of nothing.
