Leo Messi, one goal away from César's record

Recommended Posts

Unbelievable player, now carry your country to a World Cup and Pele can go do one.

Ha, and therein lies the problem with Messi. A strong case for one of the all time best, up there with Maradona and Pele, but the difference is, like you say, he's not been able to recreate that astonishing form for Argentina. Despite them having a bloody strong team.

Many say it's because the Barca system lets him thrive - and that C Ron would also be sensational in the same system. And the Argie one does not fit him in as effectively.

They should just ask him how he wants to play and go with it.

As long as he doesn't win a world cup it's going to be hanging around his neck when he's compared to the rest of the greats.

Like Johan Cruyff and Michele Platini Van Basten, Guillet etc?

Always been a massive Maradona fan and for me he remains the best ever despite his goal ratio and frequency being lower than Messi. What you've got to remember is he played in a time when defenders could chop you in half and get away with it not like now. When people say he won a World Cup on his own of course that's not true, he was part of a team but he really did drag his team mates along for the ride. What he did with Napoli and with Argentina puts him just ahead of Messi in terms of achievement against the odds.

Messi plays in the best team ever to grace the game, without him they'd be contenders for everything.

Yup thats the 2 points I made on another thread a few weeks ago. Maradona was kicked all over the park and he went into a Napoli team that wasnt full of world class players unlike Messi with Barca where its a team of superstars. If you took Messi out the Barca team and put him in say Athletico Madrids team he'd still be an awesome player but wouldnt get half the goals he does for Barca.

Messi has to do it with Argentina for me.
