Dons face Gers duel for Murray

Recommended Posts

ABERDEEN and Rangers are set to battle it out for Murray Davidsonâ??s signature.

New Dons boss Derek McInnes wants to make the St Johnstone midfielder his first signing at Pittodrie.

But Ally McCoist has not given up hope of capturing Davidson on a free as he rebuilds his squad for next season.

Sunsport understands McInnes has already made contact with Davidsonâ??s representatives. And he is hoping to get the Scotland international tied up on a pre-contract deal before the season ends.

Rangers have also made their interest known and could offer the 24-year-old more money.

But Davidson last night hinted he wouldnâ??t want to drop down the leagues to play for Gers.

He said: â??You look at people like Lee Wallace. They dropped down and youâ??d have to ask them if it affected them. But as a player I want to go and play at the highest level possible.

â??Itâ??s obvious Rangers are not playing at the level Iâ??m playing at right now. So Iâ??d be dropping down a level. That would be a big factor when I look at my options.â?

Former Saints boss McInnes signed Davidson from Livingston in 2009 and planned to take him to Bristol City this summer before he was axed.

Davidson has told Saints he will move at the end of the season and hinted that he could head south. He has watched ex-Livi team-mates Graham Dorrans and Robert Snodgrass shine in England and admits he could follow their path.

He said: â??The two of them have gone to the Championship and been excellent and now they are in the Premiership. There is no reason why I canâ??t do that.â?

Aberdeen can have him. Im getting concerned about the number if incoming average SPL players we are being linked with. They will go on 3-4 year deals and buy that time we will be in the SPL again with a squad full of players who arent good enough to challenge for the title.

The player either doesn't want to play for Rangers or wants us to compensate him for dropping down a level. If playing for Rangers isn't compensation enough for him then we shouldn't pursue this one any further.

He's a decent enough player, but not good enough to push the boat out for. Higher wages should be saved for players who'll make a significant difference.

I should add are we aiming for mediocrity? When we eventually do get to the SPL we want to use funds to bring in much better quality. If we go down this route of Daly, Davidson and others already mixed with what we have we are digging a big hole again for ourselves. We will have a large wage bill.

When we get back to the SPL we'll be able to attract a higher standard of player and we'll need additional funding to do so. There's little chance that £10-20m invested in the squad will see us competing for the SPL title.

We have to get back there first though and for that we need to bring in the right type of players to balance the squad.

Its a bit of a catch 22. Sign a decent standard of players to get us up the leagues but when we get there we cant be sitting 3rd-11th and just fitting in. This is where planning from the management (Green down) have to have a plan in place. Likes of Sandaza on a 4 year deal is crazy.

I wouldn't have signed him in the first place. Sandaza in the form of his life would be no better than what should be a 4th or 5th choice striker at Rangers, so to give him a contract of £10k a week in the final year was madness.

We need to invest more in our youth and sign the type of players who'll compliment the young players we've already brought through. Ideally we want to be in the position where we'll only be bringing in about half a teams worth of higher quality players when we get back to the SPL as opposed to practically buying a full squad.

McInnes knows how to play Sandaza, McCoist doesn't. We signed a player who plays best in a particular system and play him in a completely different system. Not very clever.

Agreed but Ally ain't going to change so not much point of having Sandaza.
